Commenter: I’m not sure why another West Newton restaurant is ‘necessary’

There’s been an interesting discussion on the NextDoor Newton app (registration required) about Mark Development’s proposal to renovate and expand the building 1314 Washington Street (site of the Santander Bank) to bring a new restaurant and three story office building to West Newton Square, starting with this comment….

I thought West Newton had a good amount and variety of eating places, so I’m not sure why this is necessary. Not sure where

Mayor: ‘I’ve got a few concerns’ about police station proposal

Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller reports in her most recent email newsletter that Mark Development was the only developer to respond to the city’s RFP to find a new site for police department headquarters. Something tells me this was not high on the list of needs of the long-time residents of this neighborhood. Just saying. But then, some folks seem to know what my neighborhood also needs so that it can start ‘gaining traction’ as you say.

Is a community only supposed to welcome and encourage businesses that serve the “needs of long-time residents” of that neighborhood? Please share your thoughts.

Jeff Speck shares his vision for Riverside station

City planner and urban designer Jeff Speck is the lead designer of the soon to be proposed designed for the Riverside MBTA station (and also the guy behind this vision for Washington Street). He submitted this guest blog post.

As the lead designer of the proposed development at the Riverside T Station, I have been asked to write a post explaining the thinking behind the plan. While I believe that the principles and goals outlined here are shared by the entire development team, the thoughts that follow are my own

As seen below, the site is a special one, adjacent to the Charles River greenway, flanked north and south by open space and golf courses, east and west by mostly low-density development at some distance, adjacent to a major highway
