How would you rate Ruthanne Fuller’s first 100 days?
It’s been just over 100 days since Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller was sworn in as the city’s first female mayor, And she will present her first budget to the City Council on Tuesday. How do you think she’s doing? Why we should all care about what happens to Mount Ida’s campus
As anyone who has been following the news knows, UMass Amherst deal to acquire the Mount Ida College campus in Newton is drawing intense political heat. As I wrote in a statement for the Newton-Needham Chamber, lost in all the noise is the fact that this proposal...Reminder: Road closing in Newton on Marathon Monday.
From the Newton Police Department: On Monday, April 16, the 2018 Boston Marathon will take place and the route will travel through Newton via Washington Street to Commonwealth Avenue to the Boston line. Please be advised that road closures along the route will occur...If it’s a problem at Walden Pond, how about Crystal Lake?
Here’s an excerpt from a Boston Globe article about Walden Pond (bold added for emphasis).
Is there any reason to suspect that this wouldn’t be just as true at Crystal Lake?As the climate changes, the water is expected to get warmer, which will favor algae that make the water murkier. The warmth also helps more phosphorus, a key nutrient for the algae, escape from the sediment at the bottom, he said.
“Phosphorus is a fertilizer. You put it on a crop, the crop grows better. . . . You put it in a lake, the algae grow better,” he said.
The other problem with the warmer temperatures is that it will lure more people seeking relief from the heat to the pond, “and a certain percentage of them pee,” he said. Previous studies have found that half the phosphorus in the lake in the summer comes from human urine.
Carlson Woods sale called off, following UMass’ Mount Ida acquisition
On the heels of news that UMass is acquiring Newton’s Mount Ida College, plans to build eight homes along Carlson Avenue will not go forward, Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced today
“I’ve spoken with University of Massachusetts President Marty Meehan and he’s committed to being a good neighbor and working with the residents of Newton,” Fuller said in a statement.
Meehan said that the present agreement on the eight parcels along Carlson Avenue would not go forward as part of the UMass transaction, which was part of a positive dialogue about the future of the campus, the statement added.
Did PS&T rush (and try to hush) new parking rules? Listen and decide
There’s been a lot of discussion on this thread here and this thread here about proposed changes to Newton’s overtime parking rules.
Here’s the minutes and the audio from the City Council’s March 23rd Public Safety and Transportation meeting* where this proposal was approved to be sent to the full city council for a vote. (Deliberation of the proposed parking rule changes came nearly two hours into the meeting)
After listening to it, I can’t help but get the impression that the discussion was rushed and the committee was tired and anxious to pass the proposal without a lot of debate. I’d be interested in hearing if others reach the same conclusion.
Particularly rushed is the deliberation over the proposal’s mos

Proposed parking rules would prevent same day return visits
The Newton City Council will consider new parking rules when it meets Monday night that –if I understand them correctly — would not allow you to park at the same meter, the same block or even the same city parking lot — twice in the same day. So, for...
