Newton Mayor Setti Warren told Boston Herald radio yesterday that he would follow Boston Mayor Marty Walsh’s lead and open Newton City Hall as a safe haven for illegal immigrants if President Trump steps up deportations.
“If in fact there are draconian measures taken by the federal government and people feel unsafe and they need places to go, of course I would I think that’s who we are, that’s who our values are. I think you’d find a lot of people in my city who would open their doors.”
Thank you Mayor Warren!
He really has stepped up in a big way on this issue. I also really appreciated this great Setti Warren tweet from a few days ago:
My dad was arrested for the “jail-able offense” of sitting at a lunch counter. He wasn’t afraid of threats like this, neither am I. #mapoli
I guess that will be the only place illegal immigrants could actually *afford* to live in Newton….
I hope his offer is open to the following people also
– homeless
– homeless veterans
– abused women
– runaway kids
Infact, he could open it ‘today’ to the above folks.. why wait?
I agree with Bryan. I’m proud that the leader of Newton is taking a firm stand on this issue. And I like this feisty version of Setti. But I’ll be honest…
I’m not sure how much of this is heartfelt, and how much is political calculation. My reservations about Setti’s willingness to stand up for those in need, go back to the city’s ill conceived ban on medical marijuana. Many patients [some sick–others dying] went four years without access to their medication. I never once heard Setti stand up for them.
@bugek is 100% right.
Easy for Warren to say this now huh?! The real question is, would he harbor/feed illegal immigrants in his own home? Would any of you? Especially those of you that have marked your homes as a “welcoming homes” with the rainbow peace flag you display on the fronts of your homes??! Are you really that welcoming or do you do it to impress your friends? What illegals are flocking to newton begging for protection? Has anyone taken any in? Asking for a friend….
Realistically folks Newton City Hall isn’t equipped for over night guests. They have limited bathrooms and no shower availability. Maybe the War Memorial can be set up for temporary cots but this is certainly not a permanent housing option by any means.
