I don’t have any first-hand knowledge of the situation at Turtle Lane Playhouse but from the article this weekend in the Globe, it seems that the decision to close the Auburndale community theater after 32 years stems from the desire of two of its principles — Doris “Bobsie” Mitton and Richard Itczak — to move on or retire, as well as a lot of red ink.
The theater’s board of directors is looking for somebody to buy the sprawling white building at 283 Melrose St. and keep the theater alive, said Laura Schrader-Johnson, Turtle Lane’s executive manager.
While Turtle Lane’s future is tenuous so is the fate of the building itself. We all know that the community in Auburndale rallied heroically to save and reinvent the branch library. Is there a way to rescue283 Melrose St. as well?
And if it’s not a theater, what should it be?
.
Must say I’m surprised no one has any suggestions for what they’d like to see in this space.
Not even a wiseguy comment from Hoss? No conspiracy theories from Re? Hello, is this thing working?
A neighbor, non-profit Auburndale Community Library, Inc is in good position to take Turtle Lane Playhouse.
If it has happened, that will be one more reason for the next voting (which might become successful) on the spin-off of Auburndale from Newton, which became unlucky.
