One of Newton’s most beloved coffee shops/gathering places — L’Aroma Bakery & Cafe — is on the market, according to this listing. It appears the Salie family is looking to sell the building, at 15 Spenser Street, to someone who might want to take over the business they’ve so lovingly built, but it does not seem to be required.

This makes me nervous. Honestly I’ve been nervous about the fate of L’aroma since their son Afkham moved since I felt like he was the heart and soul of the place, but we’ll see…
How many years was it there?
The Salies are a wonderful family who have dedicated their lives to caring for their customers. I hope they find an equally wonderful buyer for L’Aroma Cafe to continue operation of this Newton landmark.
Thanks for your comment Thomas. I’m surprised by how few comments there are here about this really special family and their business.
Months after moving to Newton and contacting several city council members to introduce myself (as a new resident and ex-councilor elsewhere), Ted Hess-Mahan responded and suggested meeting at L’Aroma. He said it was his favorite.
I subsequently played that card as well. When people asked me where to meet, I offered that place. Great meeting spot between the two levels.
I never ate the food. It’s on my bucket list. I did enjoy the coffee and smoothie selections.
How long was it there?
I believe they opened in West Newton around 2008 or 2009. Personally, I’ve been trying to comment since I saw this posted, but I’m kind of speechless – it’s hard to imagine West Newton without L’Aroma and the Salie family. I wish them nothing but the best.
love that place. Is the bakery for sale separate?
I just read that L’aroma is closing for good next week. I’m so sad!!
I was in there this morning and the Owner said she has sold the building to someone from Newton. She said the new owner’s intent is to rent the space out and there is potential that there could be another cafe there in the future, I recommend stopping by before they close to show them some love and appreciation.
I’m so sorry to hear this, one of my favorite spots for breakfast and the upstairs was a wonderful place to meet with people. I wish the owners so much happiness in whatever comes next for them, I loved coming in to see Afkham when he was here, and then Sinan after him.
This is such sad news. I will miss the owners. A lovely place to meet friends for coffee and good food.
This is so sad. One of our favorites, with very kind owners and delicious food.
