Although they didn’t exactly follow the full recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission, the Newton City Council will vote tonight on whether or not to raise their salaries along with the mayor and school committee. Here’s the Finance Committee Report and Reports Docket.
City Council to vote tonight on giving themselves, mayor & school committee raises

The Teacher’s Union will be watching closely. Councilors should not be voting themselves a raise. Further, Councilors need to come up with a proposal to cut the size of the Council before pursuing salary increases.
If the councilors vote themselves a raise before the teachers get a signed contract, we have a problem.
@Newton Mom – We have a problem. You can show your outrage at the ballot box.
Teachers are not the only City union without a contract. Ask the Police Superior Officers…they have been without a contract for over 5 years. If the City Council votes themselves a raise, it will be shameful.
Let’s hope Mayor Fuller shows political courage and uses her veto pen.
Interesting, not one Councilor mentioned cutting the Council size during the debate of this item.
What is the result of the vote?
No raises until all contracts are settled.
There were two “Profiles in Courage” on the Council who stood on principle and voted NO.
Jake Auchincloss and Becky Grossman. They truly get it!
Voting to give yourself a raise is more courageous.
The council voted 22-2 in favor of all three increases.
