The “Hello Washington Street” project, also known as the Washington Street Vision Plan is at the half-way point of a yearlong community planning process. The Principle Group will release the first draft of the vision plan and zoning recommendations on October 24th, 2018 at Newton North High school from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.
At this event the Principle Group will discuss the multiple options that have been studied for each area, the trade-offs of each option, and ask for community input on balancing various priorities. The planning team will use images, drawings, and text to show options for what Washington Street could look like five years in the future, and twenty years or more in the future.
No reason to make major changes to Washington St. There is no
community mandate for these dramatic re development plans.
I would suggest the village in Newton Highlands ought to be the first place to undergo dense housing developments. It is so close to major transportation and the green line.
Hundreds of people on the northside favor small scale development but do not want new growth all along Washington
St. Residents do not favor major zoning changes. They want to retain the village character of their community.
I must have missed the Marvel comic where Colleen was bit by a radioactive spider and obtained the super power that allowed her to know what all Newtonville residents believe.
This whole endeavor will be worth it if it brings more frequent commuter or bus schedule AND is able to attract tech/biotech startups to employ here to increase city tax revenues
We’ll find out in 7 years…personally this is how i would like to gauge its success. I think it has a good chance, better than not trying
Washington Street is pretty ugly, especially outside of the village areas. A combination of an improved streetscape (barrier at the highway, wider sidewalk, bus stop furniture, trees, lighting, bicycle lanes, retail facing the street) and buildings on the sidewalk with no parking in front, retail and services on the first floor, housing above would make Washington Street a much better place
