Lasell College has been featured prominently in two unrelated Globe stories this week and it’s only Tuesday.
In the interest of time (and as sort of a Village 14 experiment) I’m linking to both here.
Residents, college battle over late-night lights on athletic field
Mount Ida president blames closure on Lasell College maneuvers
Re #2: the interview with Barry Brown was pathetic. For those who haven’t read it, he basically tries to throw Lasell under the bus for the failed merger. He tried, darn it, but Lasell just wouldn’t go his way. He doesn’t really talk about his own secretive actions in trying to merge higher education institutions like you would any other profit-making business. It’s mostly Lasell’s fault. Colleges like Mount Ida do face significant, existential challenges today, but in the end, he wasn’t up to the task. And then there are the students and faculty whose lives have been upended. After this sad episode, I wouldn’t trust him to run a lemonade stand.
“Under Lasell’s most recent proposal, the field would be lit until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and until 8 p.m. on Sundays during the spring and fall. In the winter months, the lights would be on until 7 p.m.”
I don’t consider that to be particularly late.
Ted,
Mr. Brown (A/K/A the President) threw Lasell under the bus, or he tried to and landed up sounding like a whiner. He was the leader of Mount Ida and he threw the school and the students under the bus. Lasell looked at the deal as a business and said no, and Lasell can do that a thousand times. Mr. Brown should look in the mirror and ask himself what the truth is. The students got screwed by Mr. Brown and the Trustees.
Yuppie, that sounds like a reasonable lighting schedule that would also work for, say Newton North.
What is the lighting curfew for Albemarle? It’s definitely no earlier than 10pm.
