404!!
I understand from the City Clerks office that when we see the Ward 4 results from the machine it will only be marked as “write in.” After that poll workers will hand count those write in votes so those results will take a while.
Adam,
404 votes for which candidate?
Sean, it was a 404 error 😛 site is now working for me
I’m seeing all zeros. Usually we see some numbers by 8:15.
Is this thing on?
wowza! The results are up!
Not sure if 100% of votes are counted for the wards/precincts with votes listed, but if so, it looks very good for Fuller. She seems to be winning a lot of places where Amy did well, suggesting that either Amy votes surprisingly flipped to Fuller or just didn’t show up.
I think we can call it for Fuller as of 8:40pm.
Ruthanne seems like she is doing well, but Scott’s Ward 1 is not in yet.
The Charter is darn close.
Too soon! Lots of Lennon areas still to report. But the yes vote is not looking good…
Looks like I’m going to eat my words.
@Michael….not so fast, Lennon is slightly ahead
Charter looks dead. The mayor’s race is close,
No vote has won the day. Congratulations to the No campaign.
Ward 6 is the only ward with no results yet for ward councilor.
Looking pretty good for Fuller.
Eeeeeek, some close races….
Where is the Ward 4 race reported? Are the ones that are uncontested on ballot not listed?
Yes, the real time results don’t include uncontested races.
Really close races for sure! looks like 20k turnout or so? not sure what the voting population in Newton is…
If V14 is going to have “Newtonian of Year,” I nominate Emily Norton. Any chance of that?
3-2 going to Fuller should give her the win, the remaining areas are pretty pro-Fuller. Odd to see the charter fail but Fuller win.
Wow, can 6-1, 6-2, and 7-1 deliver a 300 vote margin for Ruth?!?
This is insanely close people.
I’m calling it for Ruthanne!
If Ruthanne does win, combined with the No vote winning, Kudos to Andy and the Tab.
Scott giving concession speech now
Congrats to Ruthanne, never been happier to be out of NPS, I worry for its future.
Very interesting. The candidates who supported the charter did a lot better, but the charter itself is soundly defeated. Hopefully
Sad day for our public schools, unions, and custodians.
I meant to say: Hopefully some of the proposed changes, e.g., term limits, will be implemented through the city council.
Newtoner,
Same conclusion. With one exception (Ward 1 at-large), it looks like the all the contested races are going for the Yes candidates. Noel v. Blazar is a shocker with No prevailing.
Mary Mary:
Have faith. I think once the heat of the election has passed, what will return is that Ruthanne and Scott are very close on the issues. The schools, the unions, and I hope even the custodians will be fine.
For the record, I’ll be the first one to say outsourcing the custodians would be a huge mistake.
I’m holding posts until 7-1 drops, but it looks like a good night for women and Yes-leaning candidates.
Sean:
I think folks really considered the two issues separately.
Did the Council just take a turn towards the left?
I hope you’re right, fig. In happy school news: yay Anping, Bridget, and Matthew!
Fig-arello,
Indeed.
Any news on the write-in campaign?
Nothing on the write-in on the real-time page. Odd that.
Wondering what happened with 7-1. I keep thinking that if I click one more time it will appear. Usually a small turnout…
Odd race and a lot of fun. What drove voters to support YES-minded, relatively pro-development candidates, even against incumbents, while voting NO? I guess voters support some measure of development but don’t want to give up local representation. I can live with that.
John White, I think you got it exactly right. Sometimes folks split their vote. Maybe the charter was just a bridge too far. But while the no campaign won, I think the council got a lot more progressive tonight, and we don’t even know about the write-in campaign yet.
If that carries, wow.
9:47. All precincts are up.
Ward 4 write-in is on the main election page and its close with 3 of the 4 in as of 10:00

I’d like to express my appreciation to Scott Lennon for the outstanding and upstanding campaign he ran from start to finish. He focused on issues, even when his integrity, his understanding of, and attention to, the neediest in our community, were called into question. In addition, he had the support of the city employees.
Over the course of a year’s campaign, every candidate will make a statement, an ad, or send out a mailing, that be taken advantage of by one’s opponent. It’s the opponent’s choice whether or not to take advantage of these situations. I stand proudly with the candidate who chose not to do so, even when presented with the opportunity.
We have a mayor-elect who has some fence-mending to do in the future. My hope is that she will reach out and listen carefully to the concerns of the Newton city employees.
Stay classy, Jane. Scott Lennon did in his concession speech.
I’d like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to my new colleagues on School Committee, Bridget Ray-Canada, Anping Shen, Kathy Shields, Matthew Miller, and Ruthanne Fuller. The night I won a seat on School Committee for the first time was a remarkably gratifying moment and I hope that each of you can take the time to feel this fully. Then tomorrow we start work, together. I’m looking forward to it!
Where can find out the results of the Area Council races?
