I understand from the City Clerks office that when we see the Ward 4 results from the machine it will only be marked as “write in.” After that poll workers will hand count those write in votes so those results will take a while.

Not sure if 100% of votes are counted for the wards/precincts with votes listed, but if so, it looks very good for Fuller. She seems to be winning a lot of places where Amy did well, suggesting that either Amy votes surprisingly flipped to Fuller or just didn’t show up.

Have faith. I think once the heat of the election has passed, what will return is that Ruthanne and Scott are very close on the issues. The schools, the unions, and I hope even the custodians will be fine.
For the record, I’ll be the first one to say outsourcing the custodians would be a huge mistake.

Odd race and a lot of fun. What drove voters to support YES-minded, relatively pro-development candidates, even against incumbents, while voting NO? I guess voters support some measure of development but don’t want to give up local representation. I can live with that.

John White, I think you got it exactly right. Sometimes folks split their vote. Maybe the charter was just a bridge too far. But while the no campaign won, I think the council got a lot more progressive tonight, and we don’t even know about the write-in campaign yet.

I’d like to express my appreciation to Scott Lennon for the outstanding and upstanding campaign he ran from start to finish. He focused on issues, even when his integrity, his understanding of, and attention to, the neediest in our community, were called into question. In addition, he had the support of the city employees.
Over the course of a year’s campaign, every candidate will make a statement, an ad, or send out a mailing, that be taken advantage of by one’s opponent. It’s the opponent’s choice whether or not to take advantage of these situations. I stand proudly with the candidate who chose not to do so, even when presented with the opportunity.
We have a mayor-elect who has some fence-mending to do in the future. My hope is that she will reach out and listen carefully to the concerns of the Newton city employees.
Stay classy, Jane. Scott Lennon did in his concession speech.

The night I won a seat on School Committee for the first time was a remarkably gratifying moment and I hope that each of you can take the time to feel this fully. Then tomorrow we start work, together. I’m looking forward to it!
