Here’s the video from the NewTV and the Newton League of Women Voters debate featuring the three candidates for city council from Ward 2: Susan Albright, Braden Houston and Jake Auchincloss
Voters citywide can vote for two of the three candiates on Nov. 7.
Thank you for posting. Speaking as John Q. Voter, I thought this was very informative and that all three spoke well and in clear terms. Some interesting decisions and feedback.
On side note, I haven’t always agreed with Susan dating back to 2002 during her stint on the school committee but I must mention that her appearance in Eli’s campaign video was a real surprise. I don’t know if that was within her comfort zone or not but either way, it took some guts to be on the cusp of dancing and rapping. In public! Well played.
@Mark: What video?
Also, are you resisted as both John Q. Voter and Mark Marderosian and does that mean you get to vote twice? Now that’s a way in increase local representation.
@Greg, I tried at City Hall but they wanted to see John Q’s birth certificate. :)
The video is

and the surprise guest appearance is around the 30 second point.
I so hope Eli stays active in the Newton community. I love his energy and his ideas.
With all due respect to her colleagues, Councilor Albright may just be our coolest city councilor.
Do you mean cool as in Calm Cool and Collected or Hip. Or maybe both. I like her!
Why does the video not synch with the audio on these NewTV produced programs? It can be annoying enough to drive someone to listen to old radio broadcasts of “Life of Riley”! :-D
Too often these NewTV/League debates are kind of sleepy. But here’s at least one notable exchange here about starting at the 14:00 mark but really getting interesting (in a zoning policy wonk sort of way) when the subject turns to “naturally affordable housing” a couple minutes later.
@Greg, I agree that was an interesting exchange. When I originally watched it, that segment leaped out.
On other note, I’m listening to the audio of the Mayoral debate right now. What a treat listening to something that just occurred this morning. Thanks to the V14 ‘gang” for posting so quickly.
I picked right up on Braden’s use of the term “naturally affordable housing.” This is the main reason I never considered voting for him. Otherwise he seems like a fine candidate.
I like Jake’s way of stating his point and then explaining it further. Susan and I agree on many things.
With all the activity on the mayor’s race and charter, this somehow slipped past. It should be noted that Braden Houston, since he registered to vote in Newton in 2008, has consistently – relentlessly you could say – voted for Republicans. In state primaries he’s favored Republican candidates who were running against Obama, Warren and several other great leaders. He’s never voted in a Democratic primary since registering in Newton in 2008. I will be supporting Susan Albright and Jake Auchinchloss in this race. Good luck to all candidates.
@Shawn: I really like Councilors Albright and Auchinchloss but you make voting Republican sounds like its leprosy. There ought be better reasons to campaign against someone than which primaries he participated in.
P.S. I voted for John Kasich in the Massachusetts GOP Primary 2016 does that mean we can’t go on a playdate?
Greg – I’d go on a playdate with you – if it were supervised by an adult.
