Here’s the video from the NewTV and the Newton League of Women Voters debate featuring three of the four Ward 1 At-Large candidates Janet Sterman, Nicole Castillo and Allison Leary.  Candidate Allan “Jay” Ciccone, Jr. declined to participate.

Voters will be asked to elect two of the four candidates on Nov. 7.

    I found this comment from Janet Sterman at the 18:15 mark to be alarming….

    “I don’t think it’s the responsibility of government to bring affordable housing to Newton…we live in a capitalist society.”

    and later..

    “If you can afford to rent here, rent here. If you can afford to buy, buy.”

    What is far more alarming to me Greg,
    is the rampant NIMBYISM and intolerance to affordable housing in Newton. You should be far more alarmed that there are quite a few people who feel the way Janet does,-some very liberal, very “concerned”, very “welcoming” residents- who would never say out loud what Janet did, but agree 100 percent with her. Those are the people I would be alarmed about. I see very few people willing to put their money where their mouths are and offer up some locations for affordable housing, or offer up their own neighborhoods.
    What’s wrong with your neighborhood? Why can’t we start there?
