How’s the French toast coming?
Excellent idea. French toast it is.
The snow’s just getting started at the moment but it’s coming down at a good clip. This looks like one of the winter storms I’m going to really enjoy. No one in our house has to go anywhere. Lots of warning, no surprises – let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
I am at work. But I’m not bitter. Much…..
Why do 3 of the 4 main Boston Television Channels find it necessary to broadcast recycled news all morning because of the snow?
Maybe all of their reporters are at home eating french toast.
As a remote employee and always working from home means snow don’t matter.
Don’t fret, it’s almost leaf blower season!
FifthGenerationNewtonite,
TV news coverage of snowstorms can pretty much be reduced to this:
News anchor: We’re here with breaking news — it’s snowing outside, really hard. You probably shouldn’t go anywhere. Let’s check in with our meteorologist for a look at the weather.
Meteorologist: Yes, it’s snowing outside, really hard. You probably shouldn’t go anywhere. But at some point, like tonight, we expect it won’t be snowing so hard. And then by the morning, it won’t be snowing at all.
News anchor: Thanks very much for keeping us up to date. If you’re just tuning in: It’s snowing outside, really hard. You probably shouldn’t go anywhere. Now let’s go to our reporter, who’s in [NAME OF TOWN], to see how things are there.
Reporter: Hi, News anchor, and good morning everyone. As you can see behind me, it’s snowing outside, really hard. You probably shouldn’t go anywhere, including [NAME OF TOWN].
News anchor: Reporter, are you seeing a lot of plows there? Are they doing a good job on the roads?
Reporter: Yes, they’re working very hard here. But it’s continuing to snow, really hard, so you still probably shouldn’t go anywhere. Back to you, News anchor.
News anchor: Thanks, Reporter, and be careful out there. Just to bring you the latest news, it’s snowing outside, really hard. You probably shouldn’t go anywhere. Let’s take a break, and when we come back, we’ll go to Another Reporter in [NAME OF OTHER TOWN] to see if it’s snowing there, really hard.
Just stumbled onto an article this site published last fall about Newton Tab editor Andy Levin moving along. And, today I see a tweet from Jonathan Dame that he’s moving along.
Discuss.
Essteeess – You must be a TV news producer 😉
Universal Hub has a great list of TV weather coverage cliches for a TV Blizzard Bingo card.
Gordon’s in Newtonville is open if you need any spirits for your blizzard party. 😀
I live on a dead end of of a dead end so I expect to be among the last streets cleaned but as of 6 p.m. we have yet to see a plow today and that’s unusual. Anyone else experiencing this?
Why are there so many incorrect stats on Newton Data Stat?
For instance: # of dog bites at off leash sites; says 0. I know that there were many reported and investigated by ACO.
http://www.newtonma.gov/gov/executive/metrics/unparalleled_public_safety.asp (bottom of page)
Harry, I looked at that and the data appears to be just for the month of November. I have no idea, but maybe there were no dog bites that month?
As of 6:30, we had only one plow come down our street a few hours ago. Usually they’re also a bit better about our street – sometimes even a bit overzealous. It looks pretty bad as of now. I’m getting concerned about getting my son to school tomorrow morning if there’s no snow day! We’ll see if we get some more plowing later.
We’ve had the opposite experience. We live on a tiny street and the plows usually miss it altogether until we or one of our neighbors call. This time around they were right on it and there’s been a couple of passes – a very pleasant surprise indeed.
Compared to past storms I’ve had to work, this was not bad. Driving ok late morning on 128, during day around Lowell, and coming home around 5. Comm Ave and side streets white but very drivable. Going back out to do last 20% or so of shoveling, but the hard parts are done. 🙂
I hate to be all “when I was a kid…” but this seems like there’s plenty of time to get things ready for tomorrow. Yet school is closed. Oh well, four day weekend for the kids.
@Greg — It may simply be that, with a fairly certain end time for the snow, that they were waiting until it was done before getting to all streets. Though I will also say that I have noticed that when a snow emergency is declared that there is sometimes a delay in slow cleanup. With fewer people on the roads, is it possible the cleanup is delayed?
At any rate, streets look pretty good right now. So well done! Other than the “Game of Thrones”-like wall of snow at the end of my driveway. Darned main road…
Who are the city officials that recommended that schools should be closed? On the voice message, the superintendent says schools are closed because of this recommendation.
We spend plenty of money for plows, both on the streets and the sidewalks; most stayed home today so the plows were not hampered by lots of cars on the streets. The storm was relatively short and they cannot open schools the day after a storm?
We live among a bunch of lemmings … one school closes and the surrounding towns immediately follow. Kudos to Needham; they don’t follow the crowd
Might be a 5 day weekend; might be more snow on Sunday night/Monday.
Yesterday’s snow showcased one of the reasons I like living near a village center. I love walking to town while the snow is falling. It was a bit too windy for maximum enjoyment, nevertheless, I persisted with Elizabeth Warren reading Coretta King’s letter playing in my head keeping me on my way.
Today too is one of my favorite types of day – A crystal clear one with the sun shining on the sparkling snow. Roads cleared, ready to go.
It’s lovely to have both days but I’m not greedy, so after today I would prefer to head toward our so-called spring on the way to warmer favorite days.
Thank you Stuart. With all the jokes about French toast and 5 day weekends does the city *really* understand what a major pain in the ass it is for families when school is cancelled, but workplaces are generally open? Do they? The snow stopped at 8pm, so if “city employees” are telling the schools the streets and sidewalks won’t be safe 12 hours later what they are really saying is: “The city didn’t do its job, so the schools can’t do theirs, and Newton families can’t either.”
