This will be a great weekend to stay in Newton.
Starting tonight at 8 p.m. (Friday Nov. 4) Highland Ave. over Route I-95 will be closed to all traffic in order to allow for the demolition of the old bridge crossing over the interstate. Traffic on I-95 will be detoured over the on-off ramps at Highland, which is why Highland has to be closed this weekend only but stores and restaurants will remain open. The bridge and I-95 will be fully operational by early Monday, in time for the morning commute.
The Mass. DOT and their contractor did a great job in completing the demolition of the Highland Avenue bridge hours ahead of schedule. It’s great to drive the streets of Upper Falls without the signs for the double detour with or without the garbage bags over therm and the truck detour.
The completion of the Elliot Street bridge is still a month away. The businesses of Upper Falls are still open and ready to serve. Please eat at Dunn Gaherin’s and the Echo Bridge Restaurant at the corner of Elliot and Chestnut Street. Buy gas or get repairs at the Echo Bridge Service Station on Chestnut Street. Shop early for holiday gifts at the 12 shops at the Mall and Echo Bridge at the corner of Elliot Street and Chestnut Streets opposite the restaurants. A month more of business can make a big difference to these and other Upper Falls entreprenurs.
