Candidates for Newton’s Charter Commission still have until the end of today (Tuesday) to turn in their nomination papers. Here’s the 14 candidates who’ve been certified as of yesterday [EDIT: plus the 8 additional candidates who were later certified before the deadline, for a total of 22 candidates on the ballot for 9 seats]:

Parker Peter Bruce |
Just talked to chris from elections department, he said there’s still “a bunch” of signature sheets that haven’t been certified, yet. Everyone was working on it, we may have over 20 candidates, but thats just a guess.
List is updated. http://www.newtonma.gov/gov/elections/
20 names so far, I’m hearing it will be 22.
I went to the Elections Dept. at 4:30PM today. One candidate turned in papers between 4:30 and 5:00PM, when paper nomination acceptance closed. There are 20 candidates listed on the City website as having had their papers certified. There may be one more coming if it is certified. The City’s website lists the following as candidates for Charter Commission so far: Jane Frantz, Bryan Barash, Brooke K. Lipsitt, Howard Haywood, G. Groot Gregory, Thomas Sheff, Christopher Steele, Joshua Krintzman, Rhanna Kidwell, Miles Fidelman, Anne M. Larner, Karen Manning, Lisa R. Teuscher Gordon, Peter F. Harrington, Charles Shapiro, Linda J. Kraus, Megan R. Meirav, Kathryn Winters, Wenhua Zhang, and George Mansfield.
Bryan is right…they had 21 submitted at the Elections Dept. when I arrived and another came in at the last minute. So 22 are possible. David Olson said Thursday we should know
My understanding is that Kenny Parker and Peter Bruce will be the final 2 names, but we shall see.
Congratulations everyone!!! And the two coming tomorrow.
So far I see a very diverse group of people on the list. This makes the election far more interesting. There are a few people running who represent the “status quo” sector; but there is also a significant number of people who could truly impact worthwhile changes in Newton’s charter. The upcoming election could prove to be very informative for the electorate. We should all pay close attention to what all the candidates say and do.
And…it’s official! 22 total candidates in the pool, Peter Bruce and Ken Parker coming in at the buzzer.
So, there are 6 ex-elected officials. Assuming with their name recognition they all get in, that leaves 3 spots for the other 16 candidates.
@Tom, by that math there is one spot for 14 people with Kathryn and I as currently serving elected officials 🙂
Groot, sorry, but you’re in an area council. I’m not sure if an area councilor has name recognition throughout the city. But I’m sure you’ll kick a@@ in your ward.
Groot, but then again I could be wrong
