Lost Women Bad Directions?

That man is such a nice person. He was very helpful to me in answering my questions about my DIY projects. Happy Retirement!
Indeed happy retirement. I had the distinct honor of giving Al the EDC Village Business Award this past year, and have had the pleasure of seeing him on a semi regular basis after walking my kids to school for the past few years. My dog has been known to try to visit at 11pm to try to grab an addition biscuit as well…
We are told that another hardware store will be coming into the space, but do not have additional details yet. We hope that whoever comes next will keep the hardware that keeps our 1920’s era homes working!
I’ve just been told that the new owners intend to keep the Waban Hardware name but also need to apply for a special permit.
Al was a beloved, interesting character in Waban Square. Always a gentleman, he gave biscuits for dogs, advice for diy projects, resource of twentieth century Waban history and the “proper” dress for each season (Bermuda shorts with knee-high socks from Memorial Day to Labor Day only).
The “no frills or drama” way that he announced his leaving was a classic example of his Yankee demeanor.
I considered him a friend and will miss him.
Greg: what new use would the new owners need a special permit for?
Al Thurston, thank you for all you have done to keep the “village concept” alive in Waban. You have been the epitome of the village business owner. You have consistently treated your customers with courtesy and professionalism. You always had an answer for any of my DIY projects; many times providing me a better/easier way to accomplish my tasks.
I wish you health and enjoyment with your retirement. You now will have the time to complete your own DIY project list.
Al told me that a couple who own and operate four other suburban hardware stores as part of the Ace franchise will renovate and reopen Waban Hardware. He assured me that he put in a word for the neighborhood dogs so there are hopes that the Puparoni will continue…
The Boston Globe reported today that Waban Hardware has been bought by a Wayland couple who own four other neighborhood hardware stores.
@Terry Malloy – the Globe said that they need to apply for a parking waiver.
