A reminder, this is happening tonight….
All 24 seats on the soon to renamed Newton City Council and all eight seats on the Newton School Committee will be on the ballot this November. If you’re thinking about running (or running again), you should certainly think about attending this….
Don’t Just Stand There…RUN!
Thursday, April 9, 2015 from 7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.
at Brigham House, 20 Hartford Street, Newton Highlands.
How to Run a Campaign for Local Public Office: Considering public office? Helping someone run for office? Interested in how local campaigns work? The League of Women Voters of Newton invites candidates, potential candidates, campaign managers, campaign treasurers, and all interested citizens to a workshop that offers practical information and advice about political campaigns by a group of knowledgeable panelists:
- David Olson, Newton City Clerk, will give an overview of the local filing and state requirements
- Claire Sokoloff, former School Committee Chair, will discuss being a candidate and elected Official
- Greg Reibman, President of the Newton-Needham Chamber of Commerce, Village 14 founder and former Newton TAB Publisher, will discuss effective Press/Media communications
I couldn’t attend due to a conflict but would love to hear a recap and discussion. Greg?
Also @Steve: I’ll let someone else recap last night but I will say that one of the main bits of advice I gave candidates last night — and always give candidates — is “don’t let others define you.”
By that I mean, do everything you can to let voters know who you are and what you stand for yourself, rather than becoming defined by a potentially controversial supporter or single issue group. Participate in blogs, list serves, attend events, speak out, meet people, so we see you as your own person, rather than being connected to someone who may be connected to an issue or cause that will forever pigeonhole you.
@Greg:
I heard about two people who attended (I had guessed about one of them and the other had told me he/she wasn’t running)…are you going to sit there with all that information (remember you’re a newsperson at heart) and not tell us who got a toe in the water? No pictures, no rumors, no spoilers? Oh, come on. We bloggers won’t bite…will we?
There was someone who said they wanted to run for Waban Area Council president but nobody cares about that contest right?
@Greg: Who???? We will grab them and push them to the fore. You still didn’t answer…very unlike a true newsperson who is driven to tell all!
By the way…although this is not the thread where your caption was challenged and changed, I think that you could use a bit more restraint. Demonizing the opposition on any issue is unnecessary when there are cogent arguments to made on both sides. Listening is important. Kouril-Grieser stands in intelligent opposition to your ideas of what should happen to Newton. She deserves to be heard. Whether the majority of voters concur with her words or yours, inflammatory and derogatory remarks about someone’s arguments does not plead your case adequately. It only sounds like you don’t want to play nicely with others in your sandbox.
@Sallee: Please read my comment here. And preferably respond on that thread there was well so as to avoid multiple conversations about the same topic in different places.
