“While walking in Edmands Park today, I saw that someone had put up a nesting box on one of the trees bordering the main open area off of Blake Street. It appears new and it’s quite large––I’m thinking a Screech Owl box?
As a bird lover and a frequent visitor to the park, my curiosity is piqued. I would be grateful if anyone could put me in contact with whomever put up the box, as I would love to learn more about it. I’m so glad to see someone else taking an interest in the birds of Edmands Park. Here’s hoping the box finds inhabitants this season!

I don’t know the answer, but Kaija was a member of the state champion (and almost national champion, I think) NNHS Envirothon team a couple of years ago, in a year when the focus was on Forestry, and was very helpful and a quick learner at our Newton Tree Conservancy planting.
While walking my dog in Cold Spring Park a few weeks ago, I talked to a fellow who was putting a similar box up there. He said that one was for flying squirrels, he hoped, and he did mention putting up other ones around town, including one for screech owls. It all has to do with the size of the hole in the box, apparently. Unfortunately I didn’t get his name.
