This year’s unprecedented winter weather has been hard on all of us, including our restaurants and their employees. With temps expected to soar in the 30s over the next few days (SPF 30 at least!), now’s a great time to give yourself a break from cooking and get out there and eat.
And here’s your chance to put in a plug for your favorite(s) Newton restaurant(s) here.
Check out the hamburgers at the Social, the restaurant in Newton Corner attached to the Crowne Plaza Hotel. They’re really delicious, as is the tomato bisque app that comes with a lovely warm grilled cheese sandwich! And, if you’re lucky, as I was last night, you might even get a glimpse of the Newton-Needham (or is it Needham-Newton?)Chamber of Commerce event in the hotel or the Democratic City Committee balloon-decorated event in the Social’s rentable back room. What were you all doing there? It looked like fun!
Staying in Newton Corner, I’m a big fan of Max & Leo’s pizza, tho seating is a bit scarce.
Also, Hopster’s is a great place for beer-lover’s you don’t have to be brewing to come in for a pint and a bite of their flatbreads.
And there’s always Buff’s Pub for wings.
Dunn Gaherin’s in Upper Falls. Good food, friendly service, good about handling food allergies.
I’ve been wanting to try Comedor in Newton Centre. Interesting looking menu, young owners, fully rebuilt a clothing store.
Come to West Newton. We have Lumiere, Paddy’s, Shogun, Comella’s, The Local, Shing Yee, Mango Thai, The Cherry Tree, Sweet Tomatoes, and, if you want something light for breakfast or lunch with your favorite hot beverage, L’Aroma.
And how could I forget my favorite guilty pleasure, Blue Ribbon BBQ? And after you eat, why not take in a picture at the West Newton Cinema.
There’s a little sushi and noodle place on Lincoln Street in Newton Highlands, Otake Sushi Bistro, that we like a lot, especially their vegetable udon soup. It’s located where Lincoln Coffee used to be.
I’m also a big fan of Cook in Newtonville.
Davio’s is excellent, and I also like Del Friscos. The deviled eggs are amazing! Tartufo is warm and welcoming, with excellent food. If you want to eat healthy, I recommend Seasons 52. Paddy’s has one of the best veggie burgers I have ever had.
I’ll certainly second the wings at Buffs – best ever! Johnny’s Lunchette in Newton Center has a great breakfast among other things. I like everything I’ve had at Cook, flatbread, onion soup, Cobb salad.
I really like Sushi Man, on Rte. 9 West, just west of Langley Rd. It makes me feel like I’m in Tokyo. The experience is not what you might expect from just driving by. Stop in.
Newtonville favorites-
If you want a quiet meal, an early dinner at Karoun in N’ville is wonderful. This Middle Eastern/Armenian menu is top notch. If you like a more lively atmosphere, arrive a bit later in the evening and it is hopping!
Brewer’s Coalition in N’ville has a great menu as well and a lively atmosphere.
Newton Centre-
For a Mexican menu, Sol Azteca in Newton Centre is great. We’ve been going there for years, and always have a great meal.
Terry O’Reilly’s has a great pub atmosphere and is lots of fun
For a casual lunch, Bread and Chocolate in Newton Highlands is a great choice.
Even from 3,000 miles away and a few years removed from my gig that helped promote restaurants in Newton, this thread still makes me very happy 🙂
Wendy! So nice to hear from you. Have you just been reading from California for all these years, waiting for a restaurant thread?
(And for those who don’t know Wendy.)
Hi Greg! Yup, I’ve been lurking all along. And I do read all the stories, but I hone in on the foodie stuff 🙂
Chuck, my husband and I ate at Comedor a couple of months ago – the food was wonderful, and sitting at the chef’s bar was very entertaining! Excellent specialty drinks, too. We’ll definitely be going back.
I like to get take out at Bill’s Pizza in Newton Centre. This is a Newton institution that has been in business since 1976 and they not only have very consistent and reasonably priced food but they are also charity and community minded with the annual 5k race that they sponsor annually. It is a family run business too.
Lumiere– we are lucky to have a restaurant of that caliber in our city.
Sycamore, Farmstead Table are both great– in that order for me.
Jake’s Falafel Corner and Max and Leo’s (try the Marley pizza)– both are awesome.
Inna’s Cafe– less well known, in Newton Center. Try the Eggs Over Latkes, its amazing.
Cabot’s– nowhere else for a great treat, even in the middle of winter.
Tried to go to my favorite take-out Chinese food restaurant in West Newton square tonight but forgot a lesson learned many times over: There is no parking. None. Elm Street is impossible with the gym and paddy’s taking all the spaces. When the newest building replaces the empty lot, I assume it will be worse. Headed over to Waltham to my second-favorite place where there’s parking all around.
Tried to meet client at L’Aroma over summer but due to no parking and the police taking up all the spaces in the back, we ended up parking on Webster Street and walking the half mile to meet there. Nice place, haven’t been back since.
Until warmer weather comes back some day, I cannot walk to these places because I’ve suddenly noticed the City doesn’t plow the sidewalks. That makes it hard to get to the main centers during winter. And I can’t ride my bike. It was stolen. And anyway, it’s cold.
I usually find plenty of parking when I go to Newtonville to the little dessert places there but I’ve heard some vague rumors they want to build some large complex, bring in more cars, people and traffic and reduce the amount of parking spaces so I guess my support of those businesses will end soon too. And Newtonville is too far for me to walk during the summer. I could ride my wife’s bike but it broke.
So, it’s Pizza Market for me – They deliver!
I agree with you Mark. Have you tried to drive down Needham Street lately? I am wondering where the members of CORD are now who helped Stop and Shop from going in there 10 years ago and opted for Avalon instead? I haven’t heard anything from that group lately? Does anyone know if they disbanded? The greed factor is out if control on Needham Street. Let’s see how much retail storefront we can cram into a square mile? Who cares is no one can access it…it looks pretty! Wait until they try and develop all those old mill buildings at the end of Needham street as I am sure that is looming on the horizon next.
Comedor is really fun and delicious! It’s nice to see people make a go of it – I wish we could turn one of the empty restaurants, like B street, into a rentable pop up space for locals who want to test there concepts before sinking seriously big bucks into a space. Ah well.
Does anyone know what’s going into the old liquor store on Centre street? One of the construction workers said it was going to be a restaurant but didn’t know what kind, except “maybe Italian”.
This thread reminds me of Yogi Berra’s quip: “Nobody goes there anymore. It’s too crowded.”
I would like to try the new restaurant B Good that opened on Needham Street last month but it is so hard to navigate that end of Needham Street at lunch time. I haven’t wanted to go out at night on these frigid cold nights. Perhaps I can try it out in the summer time when Newton’s population thins out a little bit. It seems as though a lot of Newton people vacate the city during the summer time which is good for traffic situation. Most kids that I know are sent off to summer camps and that declogs the roads of parents and nannies driving them to all their various appointments and classes.
Comedor, Lumiere, Sycamore, and Farmstead Table my current top 4. Tasty, adventurous, fresh, I love it when the price of the food is reflected in the quality.
My favorites all have a common thread: terrific owners and no need to break the bank.
We’re lucky to have two amazing, neighborhood style pubs with good food and attentive owners: Dunn Gaherin and O’Hara’s (throw in Paddy O’s)… like walking into Cheers.
Jake’s Felafel is a great spot for lunch or take out.
Comedor is fun, interesting food with very sweet owners, Jakob and Fernanda.
It might technically be in Brighton, but El Pelón (across from BC on Comm Ave) is the best taqueria in the Boston area. It’s also pretty cheap!
3/1/15 11:50 AM
Just drove down Elm Street in West Newton to quickly buy newspaper from corner variety. No parking! Again! None in lot, corner street, NO where!
The same fate awaits Newtonville…see you all at the meeting at 1 today!
West Street Grill and Fiorella’s.
I’ll add three:
Jumbo Seafood and Lee’s Burgers in Newton Centre
Los Amigos in Newtonville
