That meetup group was formed on Aug 31, 2012 and it doesn’t look like there’s been any activity on it in quite a while. The most recent post was from May of this year,
If anyone wants their leaves dealt with (absolutely no leaf blowers involved!), consider hiring the Newton North Science Team! We rake leaves, shovel snow, etc. to raise money for team expenses and travel costs for the science competitions that we participate in. You set your price (by the job or by the hour).
If you’re interested, contact our Vice President, Amy Huang ([email protected]). You can boycott leaf blowers and support a high school club at the same time!

I hadn’t noticed that Jerry, I’m glad you did. Someone from this group sent the Meetup link to us via our Facebook page this weekend.
@Kaija: Great idea.
6:30 this morning, four of them descended across the street from me and revved them up to do the condo complex in violation of the law regarding time start. By 7:15 the gas fumes throughout the neighborhood were so bad as to give you a headache. Sure, not a problem…
By “four of them” I assume you mean leaf blowers not gassy, fuming leaf blower opponents?
Leaf blowers. They were like locust. Then they were joined by another landscaping company across the street for a total of six going at once at 6:55 AM.
Did you call the police?
@ mgwa
Thank you for asking. I try to deal with these kind of items on personal basis first and give the individual(s) chance to explain / make it right before involving the authorities.
OK – did you talk to them and tell them they were violating ordinances? How did they react?
My experience dealing with neighbors’ lawn care people has not been good. When I called one company to complain about them blocking my driveway and getting nasty when I told them to move, I was accused of lying.
None of the landscapers care whether they violate an ordinance or not. It’s up to the homeowner who employs them to make sure leaf blowers [and lawnmowers] are not used at a time of day when they are likely to disturb neighbors.
Despite having a very large yard with lots of trees, I do not allow my landscaper to use a leaf blower until after October 15th, and only once for a spring cleanup in April. Also, I never allow my landscaper to use any mechanized equipment prior to 10am. It’s all about being courteous to your neighbors.
No matter how thoughtful a homeowner might be though, there’s no getting around the fact that gasoline powered leaf blowers are an awful nuisance. I don’t know which is worse, the noise or the cloud of dust and debris that floats through the neighborhood after their use. I believe gasoline powered leaf blowers should be banned in Newton. Although leaf blowers are overused, they can be a useful tool. I think we should be encouraging, perhaps even incentivizing a change to electric leaf blowers, which are much quieter and less powerful, but still entirely functional.
Bloom County weighs in on the topic

@mgwa – like
Where I live, the leaf blower nuisance comes from the City of Newton. Last time they sent a crew to do the leaf blowing, they started well before 8:00 a.m. on a Saturday morning and they had multiple (I think it was about 6) running at the same time. I’m not bothered by the landscapers working on my neighbors properties, but boy-oh-boy when the city sends them out it is quite the auditory assault.
