From the city’s website…
Because of the impending inclement weather, the following has been decided regarding the City of Newton’s Celebration of July 4th:
The Kid Morning on July 4th has been postponed until Saturday, July 5th from 10-noon, Newton Center Playground.
Concert and Fireworks have been cancelled for this year.
Carnival and craft booths at Albemarle Field have been postponed until Saturday, July 5th from 1-8:00pm.
Bummer. Why can’t we postpone it til another day?
Strange that it can’t be rescheduled. The City gets a large donation from a local business (this year, Rockland Trust) in order to put on the fireworks. I wonder how that business feels about the fireworks simply being cancelled!
I do recall fireworks being rescheduled in Newton in the past.
Completely cancelling the fireworks, a big part of our culture as Americans, is an unfortunate situation, and like everything outdoors in New England is dictated by weather. The many pieces of the event to include security, availability of assets, etc. makes rescheduling a logistics challenge. As an Alderman at Large, and a member of the Public Safety Committee, I will push to ensure a back-up plan in future years, that would at a minimum take into account one bad weather day.
Needham is still on for fireworks tonight.
I am so disappointed that the city of Newton is allowing a weather forecast to uproot a yearly tradition for July 4. Is there no way to make a prudent and flexible plan in case there is a weather problem, without scrapping the whole thing.
I am reading that the Kids activities and the carnival and craft fair are being re-scheduled for Sat July 5 — the weather is supposed to be beautiful that day — why can’t we also have the concert and fireworks, or just fireworks if the music groups cannot be available — on Saturday? I’m sorry to say this but it sounds as if those making this decision in Newton this year are not very creative — you may want to ask a group of women in the town what to do — women tend to be more flexible and more creative!

According to that, Newton and Barnstable are the only towns canceling.
Newton’s fireworks have been rescheduled for Aug 16
Weather happens – snow storms, hurricanes in July, heat waves. If establishing a rain date for fireworks display is a priority for one of our Alderman, that’s a greater concern to me. The Public Safety Committee has more important matters to deal with, such as making sure that residents are safe and secure during severe weather events.
How come the fireworks weren’t rescheduled to Saturday July 5th?
My understanding was that the fireworks company was not free until now. It may have been brought up in anothe thread, but can’t find it.
