Newton South student editors at Denebola say the decision by Principal Joel Stembridge to cancel Powderpuff was a mistake that lead to the “recent lack of school spirit among the student body.”
Stembridge did not go about his decision in the correct manner. In fact, he himself admitted he wished the conditions had been different. But in getting rid of such a tradition, he created a gap between the fall and spring—the two times when school spirit is at its peak. There’s also the concern that the annual pep rally won’t be strong enough to give students and faculty members the spirit they need to make it through the ever-stressful winter.
The forward-thinking editors go on to suggest an alternative. Read about it here.
Very thoughtful discussion of the issues and the suggested replacement sounds like an excellent idea.
My thought back then was what is the process that principals in Newton go through when they make decisions like this? I know that principals all get together for meetings. Did Joel bring this up and say he was thinking about it so that he could get the opinions of his peers?
Why does one elementary school not have Halloween themed events and others don’t? Are principals on an island and they are the be all and end all of policy at their schools?
Makes no sense to me that we would have two separate rules at each of our high schools. None.
