In addition to deep cuts at Patch, the Boston Globe “has scaled back the coverage that it provides on Boston.com’s Your Town sites by roughly cutting in half its corps of town correspondents,” Boston Business Journal reports.
There is no specific information in the BBJ story or in this blog post from Dan Kennedy about how this may impact the Globe’s Newton coverage, which has been terrific in recent years in quality, if not quantity. I’m also not sure if Newton beat reporter Evan Allen was part of the cuts (Although she is still listed on the Your Town Newton site and in today’s Globe).
Meanwhile, original Newton coverage onYour Town Newton has been noticeably thin in recent weeks.
Either way, this is a troublesome trend.
Good news. Even Allen is still at the Globe. Hopefully there will not be any additional cuts.
Between Gatehouse Media, Patch and The Boston Globe, eastern Massachusetts has at least three firms all competing in the hyperlocal space. Too many companies are chasing too few ad dollars.
