A few weeks ago, I couldn’t go out in the morning without seeing a dozen or more rabbits. Now, not so many. Mrs. Sean made a similar observation. Anyone else noticing a trend? Any explanations?

I don’t know where they’ve gone but we’ve had many fewer rabbits this entire season, much to the delight of many of our favorite plantings. Curious, but I have to admit I’m not unhappy about it.
@Jane and Sean: I suspect each you have a coyote in your neighborhood. We have dozens and dozens of rabbits.
We lost all of our cats a year ago (about 5 in the neighborhood), so I suspect that’s the case. Maybe we could loan a coyote to your ‘hood for a few weeks. Or maybe you like the little critters.
Here’s an ironic twist. The cat next door kills and eats rabbits. We don’t let our cat out at all for many reasons, one being that the two of them hate each other and we’d wind up with some pretty hefty vet bills. We also keep her in the house so that there isn’t another cat around to further reduce our bird population, or herself become a meal for either a coyote or fisher.
Poor grammar, but you get the point.
Perhaps all of your rabbits have relocated to my backyard. Good news: they are happy and well-fed on my berries and vegetables….would you like them back? I could arrange transport!
@Jane: A coyote loaner program? Interesting idea. Maybe one of our aldermen will docket an item.
It’s Friday, I’m tired. I misread the headline as “Where have the Newton rabbis gone?”
The rabbit family in my backyard are all 3 accounted for. We have 2 coyotes that cycle through about every night. Waban area.
I just took my dog for a walk. The rabbits in my neighborhood didn’t get the memo that there are coyotes around. There are plenty of them to bait my dog enough to nearly pull my arm out of its socket at least twice a day.
Gail and I live near each other. We have seen an influx of rabbits. Maybe others could tag theirs and when they run by my house I can see if they are from other parts of the City.
For the record, I don’t like the coyote loaner program.
Early summer Newtonville was Abunnydant …. not somuch now, my dog woke one up yesterday morning as we were leaving Cabot dog park — he spooked both of us, bec/ it’s been weeks since I’ve seen one. Ah, the circle of life!
Sean, they’re all in my yard.
@Adam – Our yard as well. Also, likely to have the same dog-caused medical issues Gail has.
