Clipboard toting candidates were out in full force at the Newton Highlands Village Day Sunday. Most were chasing after signatures to get their names on the ballot. (I’ve never been sure what to make of those candidates who seek to collect many hundreds more names than the required 150.)
Also on hand was Mayor Setti Warren, who had at least one volunteer (Jane Franz) collecting signatures on his behalf. Jackie Gauvreau Sequeira, was there shaking hands too, saying she was running for mayor but complaining that the folks in the election department didn’t give her any signature forms when she pulled papers last week (a claim I find hard to believe). As far as I know, Newton’s other mayoral hopeful Ted Hess-Mahan was not on the scene.
I very much regret that I was unable to make it to yesterday’s Village Day in Newton Highlands, since I had originally planned to be there collecting signatures and pressing the flesh, as they say. Our church had its annual meeting and BBQ (my wife is on the FUSN operations council, so even if I were not an active member, my attendance would have been mandatory), I had a great meeting with a prospective candidate for AAL3, and I gave an extended telephone interview to Emily Costello at the Newton TAB. I have met with a couple of people who are interested in running (and who I think could do the job) in the past few days, which is very encouraging after many months of trying to recruit someone to run, with no luck at all.
