“Brief look” is true! There is so much more wrong with this building than a backed up drain, cramped ambulances and egress issues. Ask the firefighters to show you around and you’ll get a really good look at it!
I’m voting for all three overrides. Fire Station 3 needs to be replaced. But it’s extremely unfortunate that Mayor Warren walked away from the proposed public-private-partnership that would have landed Newton a new Fire Station 3 for $0 cash outlay by the city. That same proposal would not only have given us a new fire station, it would have included a new privately owned mixed-use building on the site, which would have generated hundreds of thousands in tax dollars per year for Newton. I think Setti Warren has done a pretty good job as mayor. But he suffers from the same lack of creativity as his predecessor when it comes to developing new sources of revenue that would increase the city’s cash flow and hold down property taxes. I’m still voting “Yes,” but Mayor Warren should recognize that he missed a golden opportunity to replace Fire Station 3 for $0, go back to the bargaining table with the abutting developer, and try to get a deal done.
