Did not know he went to Fessenden! He will be a terrific Secretary of State.
And he’ll be the first white male sec. of state since the mid-90s.
At this particular time, I’m pleased that it will be Kerry at State and Hagel at Defense. Being a veteran should not be a criteria for almost any post, but it’s clear that both these men are anything but casual about going to war because they saw the grim human reality of what it really entails during their combat tours in Vietnam.
Scottish poet and songwriter Eric Bogle put it graphically in his piece ” And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”. He wrote about the ones who cheer loudest when the boys go away who just turn their backs when they come home in stretchers and wheelchairs. But the ones who have seen it all “they know, they know.”
I’m almost certain that the tragedy of Iraq will never be repeated as long as Obama is in the White House and Kerry and Hagel are heading their respective departments in DC. We owe our veterans, particularly those that saw combat, the kind of help my dad and his World War 1 buddies never received. But, the best gift we can give to our current and future service people is to have leaders who know what war is all about and judicious in how our military strength is used.
