Newton Alderman-At-Large Mitch Fischman (Ward 8) has decided against running for a seventh term on the Board of Aldermen, Chloe Gotsis at Wicked Local reports.
For those keeping score at home, Alderman Greer Tan Swiston and Stephen M. Linsky have also said they will not seek reelection. There is also a vacancy in Ward 1 due to the passing of Carleton Merrill.
Thanks for your service, Mitch. 12 years is quite a commitment. I’m grateful to anyone willing to give their time as you have, when you don’t have to.
Right on Dan. Must say I’ve been wondering if anyone was going to comment here. Took two days.
Alderman Fischman was not flashy but he was clearly deeply invested in this community.
Mitch’s contribution to the BOA is professional knowledge, thoughtfulness, and competence. His work on the Land Use committee (as vice chair) has been extremely useful. He and Ted (chair) have made significant improvements to how that committee works and helps residents achieve their goals.
In a stark contrast to those who elicit eye rolls from colleagues each time they stand up to speak, Mitch thinks before he speaks, he researches each issue, does not prejudge things, and is one of several who adds context and facts to any discussion in which he chooses to participate. I was particularly impressed that he would take the time to do on-site visits on land issues before voting. Not everyone does that.
Having Alderman Fischman as a public servant has been a huge plus for this city.
