With what appears to be four* separate state ballot question victories, yesterday’s results could be an indication that the nation is starting to understand that gay marriage is only the business of the people getting married.
* The Atlantic and Forbes have called Washington. CNN and other news outlets have not called it, but as of 9:30 a.m. EST, with 51 percent of the votes tallied, the referendum to allow same sex marriage was leading 52 – 48 percent.

Tom, thank you for running, hanging in there and in general, just plain caring.

“Spam free word press” is really messing with my posts. Unless I write everything as a single paragraph, they get rejected by that filter. Ugh!!!

Summarizing last night with one word… “Forward.” It was a validation for Democrats, and a victory for progressive policies. Same sex marriage and marijuana reform scored huge wins, and there’s no turning back either.
Republicans cannot win a national election anymore if the party doesn’t adjust its platform, particularly on immigration policy, abortion, and same sex marriage. Strangely enough, some conservative talking heads are blaming the loss in the presidential race on the fact that Romney was “not conservative enough.” Clearly they just don’t get it, and don’t understand the changing demographic of America. If radio talk show hosts and people like Donald Trump remain high profile spokesmen for the Republicans, those red state are going to continue turning blue.
All the pressure is not on the Republicans though. Successful pro-marijuana initiatives will put the federal government and Obama administration at odds with more states. They all happen to be blue states that the Democrats want to hold in the future. I think we’ll see the feds backing off, and allowing individual states to dictate marijuana policy.
I also think some Republicans do get it, and understand a failure to adjust their platform and perception will lead to extinction faster than an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs. I’d look for some of the smarter Republicans to tack left on social issues. Chris Christie for example could prove a major player in the next presidential election, if he we’re to switch his opinion and support same sex marriage.
All in all, it was a great day for the Democrats. And this particular Democrat is very happy about that.

My favorite moment of last night’s TV coverage was Karl Rove trying to browbeat the Fox News anchor. He was insistent that Fox had called Ohio prematurely. Rather than just ignore him, they took 5 minutes or so to go to the “decision desk” and have the analysts rebut Rove. He ended up looking a bit ridiculous.

Some were good and some stunk.
