We usually try and stay away from the big national stories. But if you happen to be watching TV at 9 p.m tonight and want to argue about it, knock yourself out.

The debate couldn’t have gone much better for Gov. Romney.
I dunno, Anil. He could have used facts. I thought it was interesting that after the debate, his campaign strategist said that what Romney meant to say was that he would have states cover pre-existing conditions after repealing Obamacare. That was news. Then there is the $716 billion Medicare canard. Little details like that. Or which deductions he would close, and how that would impact things like house prices, property taxes, schools, services, etc. and how those gaps get closed while reducing the deficit and cutting everyone’s taxes. And going after Big Bird was downright hostile.
Romney won the debate last night, but now he has to live with what he said.
I suppose there’s a first time for everything.
What Bill said.
President Obama was disappointing, for sure. I can’t imagine why he acted like he was at a press conference. But, while Romney’s performance was more passionate than expected and he got through it without saying anything stupid, he still hasn’t told us how he’s going to do anything. There’s still a lot of time to trip over things he said last night.
Romney said it’s not “my way or the highway” yet what an awkward moment when he nearly did his Matt Amerillo on Jim Lehrer and Big Bird.
Bill, this was a very substantive debate, which is in part why it was such a rout. There were plenty of facts, such as the 20 million families the CBO estimates will lose their current health insurance when Obamacare is fully implemented, or the thousands in increased health insurance costs for every family because of Obamacare, or trillions in deficit under Pres. Obama, or 23 million people out of work.
And yes, the $716 billion being shifted from Medicare to help fund Obamacare.

Gail’s reference to press conferences was important because it in part explains Pres. Obama’s poor performance. Pres. Obama hasn’t been doing press conferences. He makes appearances on The View, David Letterman, Entertainment Tonight and prearranged sit down interviews, but he has not had to face any direct scrutiny of his poor job performance and ideas until last night.
Anil: It was substantive and false. Here’s another for-example: Romney completely backed away from his $5 trillion tax cut. His quote: “That is not my plan.” Actually, yes it is. What is lacking from said plan is how the good governor pays for it. And that’s the big question.
I can go on. Either way, enjoy the performance. My larger annoyance today is not that Romney continues to play loose with the facts, or even accuse Obama of having his own. Nor is it that Romney essentially admonished the President on the national stage. My annoyance is that Obama, once again, brought a water balloon to a gunfight.
1. Whoever is responsible for the Republican’s primary debate schedule was brilliant. Romney is an incredibly comfortable debate master.
2. The debate showcased their personalities and style – Romney more aggressive/fiery and confrontational and Obama more poised calm and controlled. I prefer the later in a president – But I know a lot of people perceive aggression as strenth and prefer that style in a president.
3. When did it become acceptable to run the moderator – Or have any say in when you can or cannot speak. The mics should have a timed kill switch.
Anyhow – Romney used this to his avantage – To some this made him appear an ‘in-charge’ guy – to others it made him appear a bit of a bully. Again you can attribute this to debate experience.
4. Im surprised that the spin this morning is that Obama did poorly. I though he did OK – And I though Romney did better than expected. They both appeared presidential – which was a requirement for Romney.
5. Obama’s opening with his wife’s anniversary was awkward – big mistake.
6. I think all facts and figures are lost on viewers – there are asssertions and calculations on both sides that they disagree about – Both sides probably have enough ‘truth’ or ‘fact’ to make the assertion and it drives viewers nuts.
7. I don’t think either side gained ground on their positions on issues.
8. I don’t think either side had a game changing zinger or argument.
9. I think Romney gained ground with moderate republicans/independants and conservatives who have been wary of voting for him.
It’s that aggressive side of Romney that scares me to death. Can you imagine him interrupting another head of state repeatedly and insisting on getting in the last word? His total disregard for the moderator was appalling. He ran roughshod over Lerher who could have and should have put a stop to Romney’s interruptions and insistance on getting in the last word.
Obama looked like what he is, an imposter sitting where he doesn’t belong. Romney looked like what he is, the man who belongs in that seat.
We can see why Obama does only scripted performances, especially with teleprompters. He really isn’t that smart, or that quick on his feet, or a deep thinker. A very poor performance, indeed, for a sitting president.
It was also a match of strength. Given the wimpy comments O made to Medvedev, which were caught, we see that he is weak, a pushover. Romney showed himself to be a man of strength and conviction. I’d prefer him in a negotiation with Vladimir Putin or Muhammed Morsi.
We need change, as Obama said four years ago. He was the wrong change. Now we can try another.
Was CNN the only station that had a running ticker of time used by each side? That ticker showed it wasn’t Romney that commanded time. (Romney wasn’t at all impressive w me — just noting that he didn’t take up time that wasn’t fairly due)
Hoss: Romney consumed 47% of the time.
That’s right: 47%
Did I mention 47%?
The 47%er looked rather agitated at times. The podium shook whenever he jotted notes and his face got red. Thank goodness the debate was in a country where any of us can get medical care by dialing 911.
I can’t believe Mitt Romney wants to fire Big Bird.
They already canned Elmo: https://twitter.com/FireMeElmo
Ted, buddy, he doesn’t want to “fire” Big Bird. He wants the US Government to stop funding PBS. They get a load of funding from individual and corporate donations, probably the vast majority of their support. The US should be spending its money in other ways. Today’s Democrats have the notion that the government has to spend its money on everything, even if it has to borrow 40% of it.
Barry – If you were a teacher of young children, you’d understand that funding PBS is an excellent investment in the future. PBS provides early educational opportunities for all children. That Romney thought cutting these educational opportunities for children was a joke says a lot about his character.
You fell for the joke and missed the larger point – that Romney intends to cut the one publicly funded opportunity that allows children from low income families to have equal access to an effective and significant educational experience.
So I have to come back to this, because I was stunned when Romney said that he intended to cut funding for PBS and thought it was really quite funny. I just can’t believe that people fell for the joke.
@Jane. Many of them are without humor and they also have trouble with nuance and irony
