An editorial in The Heights, Boston College’s independent student newspaper published an editorial this week urging students “to respect Allston-Brighton neighbors.”
The responsibility does not simply apply to our off-campus community, however, as students who choose to make their way down Comm. Ave. on the weekends must also consider their behavior. Student parties and, even more so, groups of students wandering the local neighborhoods often create a hostile environment for those individuals who are full-time residents of the community. Retired couples and couples with young children live in this neighborhood and have done so for many years – well before students moved into these more residential surroundings..
The editorial makes no mention of respecting Newton neighbors.
Giggle.
I believe they took that editorial down since I couldn’t find it, and I’ve looked twice.
In defense, I think the student was thinking of the Cleveland Cirlce community. Still, you have a point.
Actually Elizabeth it appears we had a bad link. It should be fixed now.
If the omission bothers you, write a letter to the editor thanking them for the editorial and reminding them that Newton neighbors would also appreciate consideration.
I live 3 blocks from BC. In general, their students are smart, polite, and respectful of my neighborhood, as well as the stores and restaurants in Newton Centre that they frequent. BC also does a great job controlling neighborhood impact from their sporting events. If only they paid their fair share of property taxes, I’d be even more impressed.
