GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and running mate Paul Ryan are coming to Chestnut Hill next week for a fundraising reception at the home of former Reebok CEO Paul Fireman and a fundraising dinner at the home of New England Patriots President Jonathan Kraft, Boston.com reports.
‘America’s Comeback Team’ are coming to Chestnut Hill

Although I’m a president, I’ve never run a national presidential campaign.
Still it would seem to me that six weeks before the election I would not want my entire campaign slate in state we had no chance of winning. I suppose I’d also wonder why my candidates are still raising money at this late date. Isn’t that what the last three years were about?
Oh and isn’t the idea now about spending every minute convincing people in swing states that you care about them?
Do we know what “is” is (for)?
I’ll bet Scott brown would just as soon not have Mitt and Paul coming here at all.
BTW, I thought it was odd that the Globe didn’t say when this was taking place. According to Politico it’s this Friday.
Oh darn, can’t make it. I’ll be webcasting high school football Friday night.
@Julia: Look at it this way, you just saved yourself $75,000.
@Barry..
That puts in a very exclusive club (and you didn’t have to spend $75,000 either).
I think Romney can win Massachusetts, and that Scott Brown can also. Unlike the lefties in Newton, a great many people in Massachusetts remember Romney as a decent chief executive, see Deval (Obama’s clone) as a disaster, and recognize that Obama is the worst president in modern history. He has single-handedly destroyed America’s stature in both the western world and the third world, he has made us more of a country of parasites living off a wealth transfer that will end when the wealth either is depleted or flees to better countries, he has made us a nation subordinate to radical Islamic governments, he has perverted the American legal system through such things as the poor judgement of Eric Holder and inferior appointments to the Supreme Court, he has made us a laughing stock with such visible representatives as Susan Rice at the UN and Hillary Clinton in the State Department, he has partied around with celebrities and at fund-raisers paying no attention to serious problems, like Nero fiddling while Rome burned (literally), and is not really too bright himself, but is arrogant and self-absorbed. What else would it take to get him to lose his job?
Greg – so if Romney had the fundraiser in Las Vegas that would be OK? Like Obama did the day after the Ambassador got killed? I guess Obama is still raising money at this late date too.
@Joanne: What Jane said.
Also, this event isn’t just taking Romney off the road, it’s taking Ryan off too.
But who knows, maybe a nice private dinner at the Kraft’s will turn out to be a brilliant game changing strategy, after all Barry has already told us Romney is going to win Massachusetts.
Greg’s point (I assume) is that just six weeks before the election, Romney has chosen to spend his time with a small group of wealthy donors instead of attending events where he’d meet large numbers of voters. It just doesn’t make sense. Since the convention, his campaign schedule has been extremely light for a presidential candidate. After such a bad week, conventional wisdom would indicate that he should spend more time trying to connect with the 47% whom he describes with disdain.
Most people agree that all candidates have to spend too much time fundraising. While that’s been the case for decades now, we have our very own Supreme Court to thank for the increased pressure on all candidates to raise funds for their campaigns.
Gregg,
You forget about the $35,000 a plate dinners that were run for BHO. These weren’t ways to communicate with the masses.
We can argue about a lot of details in an effort to create “talking points” that are irrelevant. The fact remains that BHO is the worst president in my lifetime, and four more years would be a huge disaster. And that’s what’s important.
As BHO said in 2008, we need change. That’s the one thing I’d agree with…..in 2012.
Barryy:
If Obama and Biden were coming to Chestnut Hill for a fundraiser this Friday, I’d have written the exact same post. (Except I’d say, ‘Why are they spending time in a state they’re going to win anyway? They should be getting in front of voters in swing states.”)
Greg,
Money is money and you can’t win an election these days without it, as we saw in BHO’s billion-dollar campaign in 2008. Fireman and Kraft can pull in a lot of money.
Barry – do you really think Obama’s worse than Carter? I don’t think so!
“Cash low…” – NY Times article from a few days ago sheds some light on this visit. This close to the election, I say, why not stay the week Mr. Romney!
mgwa,
I think Carter lacked the skill to be president, but I think he was a man of honest, but misguided good intentions, and a generally warm heart. And I think he honestly cared about America. And, he actually brokered a peace deal between Israel and Egypt that stands today, in spite of an Islamist government in Egypt.
Obama is self-serving, arrogant, nasty, incapable of dealing with people on a warm personal level, self-absorbed, dishonest, and incompetent. And I think Obama is a one-world mixed-background person who favors the third world and in his heart dislikes America as it traditionally has existed. That’s the “change” he wants. Yeah, I think Obama is worse than Carter was. Much more dangerous.
Given that Mr. Kraft’s son got his start at Bain and personally knows Mr. Romney, I understand why he is hosting a fundraising dinner for his friend. Like Greg, I wonder about the late date. Barry, I’m glad you’re an optimist about your candidate but even Rasmussen has Obama with a 15% lead in Massachusetts as of yesterday.
Hey, if Romney wants to jump off the campaign trail and spend time here instead of in Ohio, Iowa, Florida or Pennsylvania, let him. Of course it will be interesting to see how the good people of Chestnut Hill handle both BC parents weekend and BC football weekend with the secret service protection as well. 🙂
