While Newton police have drawn criticism for being slow to investigate a ‘dooring’ allegation here, they have charged a 71-year-old man with assault and battery and defacing property after he allegedly attacked a bicyclist who damaged his car late last month, the TAB reports.
The cyclist said the suspect trapped the front wheel of the bike between his legs and held onto the handlebars and wouldn’t let it go. He said the suspect ripped the speedometer off the bike and hit him in the face.
The guy should be given a medal. Some punk screws up his property than tries to run off and gets smacked in the face. Sounds like the 71 year old was in the clear to me.
Mike
I couldn’t agree more Mike. Some people need a good ass kicking. How did the biker get away with nothing? Just because he lost the fight?
Trying to detain the biker until the police could come would be one thing. But attacking him is not an acceptable response.
If scratching a car justifies a smack in the face, then a smack in the face justifies…
Steve, not taking responsibility for the scratch in the car and trying to get away justified the smack in the face.
As someone who has driven in this area forever…Newton residents are very lucky in one thing, we have tended to be a bit more civil than some towns, but I have a feeling that over fifty percent of the people driving during the day time hours on our streets are not from this town. When I worked as a driver a couple of decades ago, one thing I realized after awhile, was that most people are packing some kind of weapon in their car, or in their bike bags. Plus bike locks and chains make good weapons too! So for those of you out there who think getting into it with random strangers is not too dangerous…Good Luck!
