Voters in Westboro are being asked at to approve a tax break for a Newton company if it relocates to their town.
MicroChem, currently located on Chestnut Street near Oak Street, could receive an incremental tax break for 15 years, the Worcester Telegram reports.
MicroChem manufactures specialty chemicals for the electronics industry. The company wants to purchase property at 200 Flanders Road to relocate. MicroChem employs 47 people, and plans to add 23 jobs — for a total of 70 — if it moves to Westboro, [Town Manager James] Malloy said
Because beggar-thy-neighbor worked out so well with Evergreen Solar and 38 Studios, and the Mass Pike/495 interchange needs more traffic? Good luck to Westboro.
From the article, it sounds like MicroChem is moving from Chestnut St. because they need more space (good economic sign) and can’t expand at the current location. Might there be any vacant spaces suitable for them in Newton, and might their current space be right for some smaller company?
Westboro voters approved the tax break on Tuesday so it appears MicroChem will be moving from Newton at the end of the year.
