Nonantum Road has been the scene of many fatal accidents over the years and was the motivation behind recent renovations. There was yet another fatality this weekend, taking the life of 22-year-old Rochester, N.H. man.
Nonantum Road claims yet another life

3:18 am. I will not pre-judge whether alcohol was involved.
As a nearby resident, I watch this area with interest. My son and I used the brand-new crosswalk on Nonantum Rd (at Maple St) for the first time Sunday afternoon to get to the river and thought it was great. On the way back, I took a step-and-stare (ok glare) to let approaching cars know they needed to stop, and one blew right by, even giving a salute (no finger, but still). I think the pedestrian right of way needs a little more oomph in these spots- with a red light or flashing yellow, or at least more stern and obvious signage. I’m sure these things were considered, but cars definitely nee a little more “help” in observing right-of-way laws.
Wasn’t there a plan for a traffic light at the intersection with Charlesbank Road? This is what I remember from when they started the project.
I walk across Nonantum Rd at Charlesbank Rd every weekday morning at 6:00 am. There is very little traffic, but still, I approach the very well marked crosswalk with caution because I know that cars don’t think they have to yield. But really, at 3:18 am this pedestrian and this car had to be the only two things moving. Wrong place, wrong time.
