The trial for Evan Hoffman, of Waban, will start next May 9 in Newton District Court. The charges are in connection to a June 26, 2010 crash that resulted in the death of Jose Puzul-Perez, 43, of Chelsea.

Here’s hoping the TAB, Patch, Globe and more will cover the trial. Village14, of course, does not have any reporters but if there’s any citizen observers who decide to attend and would like to share their view of the proceedings we’d like to hear about it.
Seeing Newton District Court, I thought there was a mistake. But no, it’s not a felony to cross into the path of a car head-on at a high rate of speed after a night of bar hopping and causing certain mayhem — at least not in this case.
Puzul-Perez family — the thoughts of many of us are still with you. This is not going to be a pleasant chapter for you — no doubt.
@Greg – Thanks for posting this. Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, I’ll be there.
Ugh. Enough with the ‘finally’ part. Welcome to the American justice system. Newton police are good and they did their job. Just stop it with this crap. Justice will be served. It just hasn’t happened at the pace that the Mob wanted it to.
Kim — You’re right, stop with this crap. Stop with an America where people who “look suspicious” NEVER get to walk away from a crime scene whereas this seasoned violent crime-bomb who has repeatedly got a pass from our system gets a ride from Mommy? Is that a smack in the face to Newton? No, this kid Hoffman obviously has a skill-set honed by many experiences where mom and dad spent top dollar to make things go away. What exact “justice” can happen in District Court to someone that recklessly caused this type of dead, as described in police reports? Stop this crap of arousing empathy for police professionals and not the people who are feeling weak and helpless in the hands of justice right now.
200 Newton citizens caused your mob scene at a swim hole seeing injustice. How many of your imaginary mob in this matter will you see at the courthouse? If there is a mob, why then did no news outlet other than our Newton Tab cover this tragedy? We are programed to perk our ears with interest and concern when a poor minority kills a well to do victim, but feel assured about our system when a rich family kills.
Injustice has been done already. So whatever the judgment is, it will reflect the racial inequality in the US.
The US Northeast has the highest incarceration rates of Hispanics in the US – White males are punished about 6 times less than Hispanic males.
Please, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarceration_in_the_United_States
Arrived this morning right after the proceedings ended so I did not get to hear the court pronounce sentence. It’s reported though that he was sentenced to two and a half years in the house of correction with 15 months to be served and the balance suspended for 5 years, no driving for 15 years, probation and 100 hours of community service. He was, of course, immediately taken into custody.
Hopefully, Mr. Hoffman will spend the next 15 months reflecting upon the awful choices and decisions he made which have led him to where he is now, and at the end of his incarceration he will re-enter society committed to being a productive member of the community. Hopefully.
Lisap, Hoffman plead guilty.
