the echo varies with the height of the Charles. Usually April showers raises the water height, consequently crisper echoation. Ides of March 2010 deluge brought best echos in my lifetime, sorry you missed it..
Ok science lovers — the pistol shot reference comes from p61 of the new paperback edition of “The Makers of the Mold” where it says: “There is a remarkable echo within the arch with the human voice being rapidly repeated upwards of 15 times and a pistol shot 25 times.” I don’t see any reference to the origin of that Upper Falls lore.
Anyone care to help Upper Falls history and (legally) try to prove these estimates?
@Hoss. I’m reading “Makers of the Mold” for the second time. Ken Newcomb spent more than 15 years putting this book together after he retired in the early 80’s. It includes a pretty detailed history of the various companies that developed and ran the ancient railroad line that is going to be the centerpiece of the Upper Falls Greenway and bike path. Hopefully we can get the project off and running in the near future. I’m certain that Ken Newcomb would be every bit as enthused about the Greenway as most Upper Falls residents seem to be.

@Kim – Give me a call (617-999-5300). I live around the corner from Echo Bridge and Hemlock Gorge. I’d be happy to give you a guided tour any time.
If you want to see Echo Bridge and Hemlock in person and help clean them up, Please come to the parking lot in Needham near the bulletin board and across the river from the Mill Falls complex on Saturday April 21 from 9:00 A.M, as part of the Charles River cleanup. @Kim. If you haven’t been to Hemlock Gorge, you are missing one of Newton’s crown jewels.
Greg, this is fantastic! (Please ignore that I’m watching this instead of finishing the Cultural Fix.)
LOVED IT !
… and when you’re done with that, check out this other <a href=:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvZEEqgAaHA"Echo Bridge performance.
Pretty cool.

Totally cool!
Wow! Way cool!
Very cool.
Embarrassed I have no idea where the real Echo Bridge is. Is it near the Echo Bridge Restaurant?
@Kim: You have not lived in Newton until you’ve been to Echo Bridge and Hemlock Gorge. I’m not kidding it’s one of our greatest treasures.

The same reference appears in Mr Newcomb’s Walking Tours essay here (bottom section): http://www.hemlockgorge.org/FHGWalk.htm
