I remember going to a public hearing many years ago when Sabra asked for more seats. They didn’t get them. I hope that requesting more seats is on the to-do list for the new incarnation.
@Sean, in my weekly meeting with the Planning Department, I learned they are coming in for a Special Permit for approximately 90 seats.
Can they get a special permit to get rid of that annoying part of the restaurant where you have to duck your head or risk getting clobbered?
Alderman Ted,
Give them the seats.
Thanks.
Let’s see, so it’s a sports pub called “Terry O’Reilly Pub” and it will have an awning painted in the colors of the Boston Bruins. Except, the owner is quick to point out that neither the restaurant nor his partner, who shares the same name as the former Bruins Star, is actually affiliated with the team (or presumably the real Mr. Oreilly). All too happy to confuse the public and cash in on the reputation of the real Mr. O’Reilly. Kinda sketchy if you ask me.
I’ll miss the Sabra and I hope nobody will be calling this an Irish pub. Some people are. It takes more than a Celtic last name and a logo with some green shamrocks to pass muster. If it’s really Irish, there will be Irish and other Celtic instrumental and ballads on the speakers along with live musical “sessions” with real amateur musicians at least once a week.
Really?! – Let me, the author of the article about Sabra’s closing be VERY clear here: at NO point in time was Mr. Saroufim suggesting that he would cash in on the name association with the Bruins. He was making a joke about the fact that his new partner shares a name with a player on the hockey team and that their awning would be black and gold. If the humorousness of his statement didn’t come across, that is bad writing on my part and not duplicitousness on his. And for the record, it is NOT going to be a sports bar- it’s going to be an Irish pub.
Bob Burke – They do plan to have live music, though I can’t speak to the type. And they hope to offer an authentic Irish breakfast at some point in the future, but they don’t yet have a date for that.
Out of curiosity (and because I might be writing the annual “Where to Go for Saint Patrick’s Day” column for Patch), are there pubs in Newton that you consider authentically Irish/Celtic?
@Wendy – I’ve got a great St. Patrick’s Day event for you! New Philharmonia Orchestra is doing a “Pub Night & Karaoke Concert” – check it out at http://www.newphil.org or e-mail me at kara(at)newtonculture(dot)org
As for Sabra, Eli is great and he knows more about what’s happening on Union St than anyone. He’s excited for the change and hoping to bolster the foot traffic for the benefit of all. I’ll miss the falafel though!
Kara, I am pretty sure the falafel is going to be on the “Sabra” side of the menu still- I said the SAME thing to Elie! 😀
If Melanie, my editor at Patch, has me write the St. Patty’s day piece again this year (last year we still had Patch Picks so it was part of my assigned duties), I will definitely include the New Philharmonia event. It sounds like such fun (and I might just show up regardless)!
i don’t need to read the article to know that someone naming a pub in the boston area “terry o’reilly’s” is trying to cash in on the Bruins legend
i agree with Really? that it’s sketchy
lou, the new part OWNER is named Terry O’Reilly. If you want to get irked at someone, blame his mother. Good gravy…
