Nice video.
Bob you looked great on the video!!!!
I’m very excited Joe is running and certain to vote for him. His election however, is not as inevitable as many people are assuming. If he relies on more TV spots like the one I just watched, I believe he will lose. The ad was bland political pablum. Passionless, and indistinguishable from hundreds of other ads running this political season. The last 20-30 seconds worked. The rest of the ad was crap.
Few have proven themselves to be worse at playing politics than I have. [Funny, but true]. Still, if I were to suggest a formula for Joe’s victory it would be…
PASSION + POTENTIAL + INEVITABILITY = VICTORY
@Joe– You are in a battle. Act like it! Don’t sell yourself in this soft spoken kind of way. You’re not in this to hold someone’s hand. You’re in this to fight for your constituents. Show that you’re ready, willing and able to do that. Tap into the passion we’ve seen from previous generations of Kennedys, because that is the expectation. Be a man on a mission, so filled with passion and potential that your election is inevitable. That’s the way to win.
Wicked Local story (with some cool photos by Jim Walker) can be found here.
Actually, Mike, I thought JK III came across as the person he is. I don’t want to hear a voice of someone trying to sound like a Kennedy. Passion can be expressed in different ways, and is more effective when it’s genuine rather than a brand name.
The Kennedy family is large and diverse, as all our families are. JK III will do best if he lets voters know who he is as an individual within the Kennedy family.
Not to be disagreeable, Jane, but just to stimulate debate… Let’s not forget Coakley vs. Brown. Most people assumed the seat to be safe, but Coakley delivered a whole lot of blah, blah, blah. Brown looked like the candidate who wanted it more, and we all know how the story turned out.
This is Joe’s first campaign. He’s squaring off against a guy who’s been there and done that before. There’s no substitute for experience on the Campaign Trail. Bielat has plenty of it, having already taken on a high profile congressman in Frank. Having already faced national media exposure. Big advantage!
Just my opinion, but I think this seat goes to the candidate who looks like they want it more.
Mike-I agree. Sean Bielet and JK III are much lower key people than the 4th district is used to (as if that comes as a surprise after Barney!), so we may see passion and hard work look different in this election than we’ve seen in the past. I’m supporting JK III and think he has a bright future, but I don’t expect or want him to feel he has to be Ted or his grandfather who was one of my heros as a college student in the 60’s.
Loved seeing Bob Burke in the video.
@Jane, Mike and Tom. My 15 minutes of fame finally arrived and went. I think JK III will find his passion when he decides what manner he wants to articulate
the main issues he’ll be running on. I’ve had extended conversations with him on two occasions. He understands issues and what is going on. That’s pretty clear when you talk with him. I think he’s looking for how he can most effectively present things to the public and I get the feeling that it’s important to him that he feel entirely comfortable with what he’s saying. I don’t think he believes that he can be effective without being genuine, and I think he is right about that. He’ll be fine.
@Greg, thanks for the link and the nice words about the photos. You know me and politics. I love covering it and I hate covering it. But yesterday was fun being part of the media horde following JK III.
Of course, the event had its annoying moment too when one of the Kennedy people told me that I needed to get back with the other still photographers on the other side of the train tracks. I asked him if he was now the boss of the MBTA …
Well Jim, seems like the MBTA changes bosses every few months these days so you never know. Did you move?
In 2010, Charles Rudnick, a graduate of Harvard College and Georgetown University Law School, ran for state senate against Cindy Creem and lost. At the time, it was suggest by some on the TAB Blog that maybe it was “too soon” for Chuck, and that he should start with something smaller, like Alderman. In Ward 1.
Now here comes a guy named Bob. Been a lawyer for a few years, but outside of that, he hasn’t done much. And he’s running for… *ahem*… Congress. And, oh yeah, his last name is Kennedy.
I don’t mean to be the turd in the punch bowl here, but what am I missing?
@Ed Prisby – … and I was just about to have a glass of that punch.
Bob Burke for Congress!
@Terry. Thanks, but I worked in Washington for more than 30 years and spent the last 10 trying to get out of there and back to Boston. Thanks for the offer, but I think most voters would have the wisdom to look elsewhere.
Greg, I shot for a bit longer and then I moved. And then I said something mean under my breath.
Sigh. Seems like a nice guy. 31 is too young. He has no experience in anything. He’s only been in the work force for what, 5 years?
I hate political dynasties. I hated them with Bush and with the Kennedys.
I’m also not a fan of Sean Beilat at all.
So odds are I’ll vote for this guy, on potential alone. But after Barnie Frank, voting for someone based on potential is just tough to do. And my fear is that unlike Barnie, if he wins, he’ll be thinking about running for Senate in a short few years.
Sometimes, the name you know isn’t the best option.
