Oh that is such a bummer… with 3 boys I do a lot of holiday shopping there! Got my mom a great knit hat there this year too, made by a women’s collective in Kenya.
Do we know why they are leaving?
Tough times for brick and mortar stores that sell music and movies. Newbury Comics re-invented themselves as a “lifestyle” store a few years back, but it’s difficult without a core product that’s profitable. The chain will stick around for a little while, but they’ll continue to struggle.
Just got back from Newbury Comics. We had a gift certificate, and asked the manager when they were closing or moving. She looked puzzled and said “We are not closing. Where did you hear that? Why would they have just spent the money refurbishing this place? We are definitely not closing or going anywhere.”
Not closing says corporate!
Curious. Since the property is being marketed.
The guy told me it is not unusual for an agent to see if any one is interested. Newbury Comics intends on staying….he could not comment about years in the future.
Sorry but that’s unusual.

The good news is that the false alarm inspired my daughter to cash in her gift certificate.
Smells fishy to me. Highly unusual to engage a commercial broker, unless the space is going to be available. It’s possible NC still has some time left on their lease though.
Could the link possibly be to an earlier listing, before Newbury Comix renewed a lease? In the phto of the building there appear to be leaves on the trees and bushes, and on the Needham Street elevation, Models is in its former location, and there is no mention of Home Goods, or, indeed Michaels. Michaels is listed on Conviser’s client list, so I imagine it would not have been politic to leave them off. Just a thought.
Greg, the same company has another Newton property listed that is now occupied by a dance studio. (It’s possible the studio didn’t lease all of the space or perhaps the website is out of date.). Are you still in charge of the Chamber of Commerce? Maybe you can use your connections to find out whether the Newbury Comics space really is up for lease.
Folks: This listing was distributed by the broker via email today (Monday Jan. 27) there is no doubt that the building on the market is the Newbury Comics site, not a dance studio or the former Modells, etc.
I don’t have any magic chamber powers, I can do the same thing that anyone reading this can do, call the broker tomorrow and ask him (they even list their cell phone number). First one to call, let us know what you find out.
Certainly there could be some confusion or a mix up or this could be some sort of negotiating tactic. But it’s not “typical.”
It also would also not be the first time in the history of man that the employees were left out of the loop on something.
Greg,
I left feedback via the Newbury Comics website, about the potential closing of the store. Shawn called me back the same day. Is there a way for you to contact Newbury Comics corporate? I did not ask enough probing questions, but he wanted me to know that the store was not closing. All I had was the initial story. He was very cooperative and asked questions.
Newton Mom — You’re not understanding retail. No one talks about divestment. Not sure why this is important though
I just came back from Newbury Comics on Needham Street. THEY ARE NOT CLOSING! They asked me to spread the word far and wide that are not closing. I will be happy to check with Conviser and Newbury Comics corporate to check out the whole story.
Did you see the fine print at the end of the Conviser listing:
No warranty or representation, expressed or implied, is made
as to the accuracy of the information contained herein.
That’s standard language on commercial listings.
I might be completely wrong, but by the way I see the map the yellow “Retail for Lease” bubble is pointing at the Gym Source building , not the Newbury Comics building.
Never mind; I saw found the second page of the listing.
oh…no……. this is my favorite shopping destination.
I work in retail, corporate never tells ANYONE when they are selling, or buying.
