This week, the Newton Theatre Company continues its fine tradition of free performances of Greek drama on City Hall steps with Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis, July 26-29 (Thursday-Saturday) at 7:30PM. As explained in NTC’s article about the play, all roles in this production will be performed by women. Comfortable seats are provided, so there’s no need for lawn chairs or blankets. In case of rain, the performance will be held inside the Newton Cultural Center Auditorium in City Hall. Donations to NTC will be accepted.
The play is full of conflict, deceit, fear, power, sacrifice for military gain, heroism, and loss. In a brief introductory talk, Chris Polt (Boston College Classics Scholar in Residence) will illuminate key themes and questions raised by the play.
Bruce. Thanks for posting what looks to be a fabulous production.
I plan to be there. “Conflict, fear, deceit, power, sacrifice for military gain, heroism and loss”. Looks very relevant to Washington, D.C. in 2018.
I really liked last year’s production and the illuminating introductory talk that Chris Polt gave then. I’m glad that NTC is continuing this tradition and that Chris will be speaking again.
Saw it last night. Highly recommend this excellent production. (Full disclosure: spouse and I have become Linda Goetz Groupies and she is a magnicent Clytemnestra!) Euripides dialogue offers its sophisticated dialectic for justification of the morality of the patently immoral behavior of sacrificing one’ s own child, even for the Glory of Greece. The all-female cast recounts the tale in unbroken rhythm, on the steps of Newton’s War Memorial with precision, vivacity and insight that brings the play’s messages to 21st Century relevance. The chairs are very comfortable. The cost is your choice to donate or not I recommend opening your purse to keep these plays before us. It is ironic to watch the play under the engraving on the War Memorial building from Horace’s Odes that translates to: “It is sweet and proper to die for your country.” Oh, don’t forget to bring bug spray.
