This is a great occasion! Not just a woman mayor, but a very qualified person t0o.
@Greg, You make it sound as if “qualified” is just a bonus to the fact that our mayor is a woman. Can we just refer to her as our mayor and judge her on the job she does? I wish her well, because if she does well, Newton does well.
With the new tax bill, these will be extremely challenging times for all state and local govts as well as our citizens.
@Greg, my apologies, my comment was directed to Newtoner, not you.
Proud of our city for electing such a wonderful group of officials.
A few things that stood out to me:
– Excited by Mayor Fuller’s speech laying out a bold agenda and giving specific timelines. Zoning reform by the fall is ambitious but I believe she can do it.
– Kudos to President Laredo and Chair Goldman for setting the tone for city council/school committee going forward. Nice to hear a shoutout from Goldman for full day Kindergarten and Laredo’s call for more civil discourse hit exactly the right tone for the afternoon.
I think we’re in good hands.
Thanks, too, to Mayor Fuller for her stated commitment to our seniors, and to launching a feasibility study for a new Senior Center. Also, it was great to have Governor Baker in attendance and as an eloquent speaker.
Me thinks you may be a tad quick on the trigger Claire. An elected official can be qualified or unqualified irregardless of gender. Newtoner
did not write “a very qualified woman”, but rather “a very qualified person”, which obviously can refer to either gender. It’s going to be a long year with plenty of opportunities for Trump bashing and hatred in general. With or without the tax bill we got it pretty darn good here in Newton. Our teachers, firefighters and police are all well paid, our legislators got a 62 percent pay raise,
we have a 200 million dollar high school and two, soon to be three new elementaries at a few million each. Our new mayor broke the “highest
hardest glass ceiling”. Be grateful we have first world not third world problems. Chin up
@Paul Green I’m pretty sure eight years ago if someone had written “Not just a Black mayor, but a very qualified person t0o.” it would have been equally off the mark.
@Claire
It is not possible that Newtoner
made an innocent, positive post
intending show her/his support
for Mayor Fuller with out any bias, malice or ill intention? That’s the way I read it. Have we really reached the point where we should expect every post, utterance, or good wish for someone to be viewed through sanitized, politically correct, parsed lenses? Have we really gotten that squeamish?
It sure sounds like it.
How can you possibly know what was going through Newtoners mind when she/he made that post without being inside his or her head?
Unbelievable!
Good luck Mayor Fuller
Have a Happy New Year Claire!
You have a Happy New Year too Paul. And best wishes to our new mayor!
It was really nice to see Governor Baker in attendance. Probably the first time a sitting Governor has attend Newton’s Inaugural Ceremonies. His remarks were very eloquent and I believe the new Mayor will have a solid friendship in the State House.
Great example of bipartisanship.
@Peter: Gov. Patrick was at Setti Warren’s first inauguration.
And by the way, it was great to see Mayors Warren and Cohen there. Cohen did not attend Warren’s inauguration. But that was a very different transition, Cohen was not exactly welcoming.
I thought today was pretty special and was pleased to have had the opportunity to witness it.
Hmmm awkward. Can’t help but wondering if there was a little political brinksmanship on Baker’s part showing up at the inaugural of one of his opponents successors. But I do feel it will be important for the Governor and Mayors to work in collaboration against the GOPs war on Blue States.
Greg, thank you for the clarification. Still great to see the best Governor in our Nation there!
Wish I could have been there today. Congratulations to Mayor Fuller and all those who were sworn in today. It is a great group of people to lead the city.
