As most folks have surely noticed, lawn signs for the Sept. 12 mayoral preliminary began showing up on Newton lawns this past weekend. Do you have one on your yard? If so, for who?
Also have you noticed any pattern in terms of where you are seeing signs for particular candidates?
Most of West Newton appears to be Lennon country, but as soon as I cross from my part of West Newton to West Newton Hill all I see are Fuller signs. I don’t have a sign, myself.
There are lots of Ruthanne Fuller signs in Waban, but I suspect the Lennon campaign hasn’t really got to work here yet. I’ve spotted one lone Sangiolo sign so far, outside the house of a prominent NVA supporter.
A Fuller sign graces my lawn near Brae Burn and there are many more of them on and around West Newton Hill. I saw several in Waban, as well. I’m seeing a few Sangiolo signs popping up in Auburndale. Lots of Lennon signs in West Newton and Nonantum.
Ruthanne Fuller is the most organized mayoral candidate I can remember in Newton. She clearly has between 500-1000 people that she can call upon instantly. Remember how quickly she turned in her nomination signatures? Now she has a pretty clear lead in the lawn sign war. As a former mayoral candidate myself, I can tell you from first-hand experience that lawn signs don’t get you elected. They are not even an accurate gauge of support. This election is going to be close. Very close! It will be fascinating to see which two mayoral candidates emerge from the preliminary next month.
Grass. Just grass.
Mike Striar is correct about lawn signs being an accurate gauge of support. If lawn signs got one elected, Chris Steele would have handily won Ward 5 At-Large four years ago.
Lots of people put lawn signs on their property and do not vote on Election Day.
@Robert – um… thanks? 🙂
I had an Amy Sangiolo sign in my front yard till somebody stole it yesterday !
Lots of Fuller signs in my neighborhood. One Amy Sangiolo sign. I’ve gotten multiple invites for coffees with Fuller, none for the other candidates yet.
And in my yard? Nothing yet. Just weeds and turkeys. Lots of turkeys. And baby rabbits.
“Black Lives Matter” and “No matter where you are from, we’re glad you’re our neighbor” in Spanish, English and Arabic.
I drove down Waverley Ave and saw a lawn with a Fuller sign and a Cecchinelli sign….lol.
Chris: Well, at least by now, you have name recognition on your side!
Will we be seeing ‘Steele for Councilor’ in another couple of years, or has that ship sailed?
@Robert – “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof”.
Quid sit futurum cras, fuge quaerere!
(Matter of fact, I should put that on a few lawn signs)
