Sidewalk Sam, aka Robert Guillemin, or the other way around, turned ephemera into immortality through his delicious irreverence of the attribution of art as eternal. He helped us all to realize that Venus de Milo’s arms, Tutankhaman’s beard, the Sphinx’s nose and Sam’s own wash-away creations on his concrete canvasses are not here to the end of time, but as a glimpse of something interesting travelling through the universe. I hope for his sake, and for the delight of those of us who might be destined to join him there, that there are sidewalks in heaven.
