If you’re of a certain age, you may recall the old U.S. Post Office creed…
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds
Well, maybe not so much reports Newton Patch…
A Patch reader in Newtonville said she has not gotten mail delivered since Dec. 31. When she called the post office she was told others had complained, too.
The recent spate of bad weather has delayed mail deliver, said Melissa Lohness, spokeswoman for the Boston area U.S. Postal Service.
We missed a day in the snow storm (I’m pretty certain), and got 2 deliveries yesterday, which seemed odd.
Not getting mail since Dec 31? Odd
Snow day and the Saturday after. Did that no Saturday thing take effect? Is that a real thing?
I live in Newtonville and continue to receive mail…junk mail. Anyone who hasn’t gotten a delivery is welcome to it.
I have consistently received mail every day. I don’t know if we got mail or not on the day of the snow storm (Thursday) because we didn’t check for mail (it’s at the end of our very long driveway) … but we did get mail on Friday. We still seem to get a mail delivery on Saturdays.
No problems with delivery during any weather issues in my part of West Newton. Still getting Saturday deliveries.
In April, the U.S. Postal Service backed off its February announcement to halt Saturday mail delivery, saying that Congress has forced it to continue the service despite massive cost overruns.
Mail delivery has become quite spotty here, a problem for us since my husband and I are both freelancers. Just this morning, for example, I received a check I’ve been trying to track down for a week. It was postmarked five days ago–in Boston. It would have gotten here sooner if they’d taped it to a turtle and pointed it up Beacon Street. We live on a small street in Newton Center which doesn’t seem to have had a regular carrier for some time, and it’s a rare week when we don’t go without a delivery at least one day if not more. Neighbors’ mail arrives here more frequently than it ought to, too. And delivery time is unpredictable–sometimes morning, sometimes afternoon. And of course sometimes not at all. Calls to the post office haven’t improved results.
I’ve had great luck with the US Mail over the years. The only problems I’ve had (on two occasions) were with Federal Express.
In general the mail is okay, but often at work a client mails me something (from two towns away) and it takes four weeks to show up. The address is clearly written, proper postage, and not over stuffed.
On Tuesdays we only get junk mail and I know our USPS packages take an extra day or two as they sit in the Newtonville Post Office….even if I have paid for two day shipping. It takes two days to get to Newtonville and another two days to get to Newton Highlands.
We don’t get mail delivery every day and things seem to be taking longer to arrive. (i.e. a piece of mail from my in-laws in CA would typically take 3 days in the past but lately is taking about a week) This has been going on for about 6 months now.
Another issue is that sometimes they just leave our mail on the front steps even when it could easily fit through the mail slot. It makes me very uncomfortable because our steps are right up against the sidewalk so someone could easily swipe our mail. Or it could blow away.
