| Newton MA News and Politics BlogOnce again Newton is launching the wonderful Artful Piano project.  They have a set of pianos that are currently being painted, each with unique designs by local artists.  At the end of May the pianos will be delivered to outdoor spots around the city where they will remain for entire summer.   One and all are welcome to sit down and play the piano at any time and perhaps entertain other neighbors in their vicinity.  In recent years these street pianos have been a great addition to our community life – bringing people together casually and informally through music.

To make this all work each piano needs a Piano Pal.  The Piano Pal can be either an individual or a team of people who organize themselves.   Each piano is delivered with a large plastic box containing a waterproof tarp and bungee cords.  The Piano Pal’s job is to unwrap the piano each day that the weather is good and wrap it back up at night … or if inclement weather suddenly moves in.

Some of the pianos already have their Piano Pals lined up but The Artful Piano project would like to put pianos in Nonantum, Farlow Park, City Hall, and in Newtonville but they don’t yet have Piano Pals for them.   If you and your friends or family would consider becoming Piano Pals for one of these pianos, please contact Lisa Rucinski at City Hall ([email protected]).  You’ll be providing a wonderful service to your community and you’ll be helping to keep this wonderful summertime tradition alive in the city.

Many thanks to Village Bank, Newton Community Pride, Newton Cultural Development and all the Piano Pals for making this happen once again this year,
