It’s no secret that the pandemic and its fallout have created challenges for many local small businesses struggling to keep their lights on and doors open. On Sunday, December 19th, Newton Centre’s brick and mortar businesses are trying something new to encourage the community to come out and shop local: they’re joining forces with twelve new pop-ups, welcoming them into their stores, restaurants, and studios.
On Sunday afternoon from 12-4 pm, one dozen startup businesses, artists, and artisans will pop up in Newton Centre with products for all tastes and budgets. Into culinary pursuits? Visit Thistle & Leek for a bite and peruse hand-forged knives by David Singer of Singer Blade Works. Prefer feathering your nest? New florist and gift shop Derby Farm Flowers hosts Claudia Doherty and her fine art paintings. Looking for a family-friendly holiday activity? Pop into Bubble Dentistry to pick up Better Life Foods’ too-cute gingerbread people kits (and grab a free toothbrush and toothpaste!)
To make things even more festive, carolers from FUUSN will stroll through Newton Centre, and restaurants like Thistle & Leek are offering seasonal warm beverages to make sure holiday strollers stay toasty.
Each pop up has been paired with a complementary brick and mortar business. Come on out, shop local, and explore the pop-up businesses in Newton Centre for one glorious afternoon of holiday shopping and fun!
Love this! See you there
I don’t cook. So literally 90% of my meals come from local takeout. But my support for local restaurants is beginning to wane, because they won’t stop feeding the rats that have infested our city.
On no less than 6 occasions in the last few months I have seen rats scurrying around Newton Centre. It’s something I never saw even once during the first 50 years I lived in Newton. The rats are disgusting, and if left unchecked they will destroy the restaurant business in most of our village centers.
The rat problem is being driven by outdoor eating areas that are not adequately cleaned, nor constructed to mitigate rodent access. It’s exacerbated by a lack of enforcement from the Health Department of the rules requiring dumpsters to be tightly closed. I’ve expressed my feelings on the matter to several City Councilors, but none have responded in substantive way that I’m aware of.
I’m contemplating hiring a photographer to take pictures of rats around local eateries, which I would then post here on V14 or publish in the TAB to embarrass restauranteurs and City Councilors into taking definitive action. If you’re a photographer or a videographer and would like to get paid to document the rat problem in Newton Centre, please reach out to me at [email protected]
French-Korean bakery Tous les Jours opened in the Murray’s Liquors spot across from the Post Office yesterday. Free mugs to the first customers!
In other Newton Centre business developments, I’d like to acknowledge the absolute genius of Bubble Dentistry, with its happy octopus at the door and huge whale hanging off the ceiling – our 4-year old daughter is begging us to take her to the dentist there.

Thank you Michael for the shout out! Our goal when we created Bubble was to change the paradigm of children’s dentistry and orthodontics. I am so happy that your daughter loved it.
