There was some trouble at Newton South over the past weekend, as an assistant coach for the football team has been fired for allegedly using a racial slur, or “racially-charged language” toward members of the team last weekend, according to the TAB.
I have no firsthand knowledge of this, but heard about this troubling news item from a friend who lives in Concord, where this coach is a Physical Education teacher (my friend’s daughter is in one of his classes at Concord-Carlisle High School). My understanding the teacher is at least suspended in that district as well pending an investigation:
From the TAB (yes, the TAB!) article:
In an email sent to parents, South Principal Tamara Stras said that coach used “racially-charged language” toward student-athletes while addressing the team during a postgame huddle Friday night. The language was used in reference to the music the student-athletes were listening to.
I can’t add anything else here that wouldn’t be hearsay, but I think the story says enough. The TAB did not identify the coach by name.
(And sorry to distract from our pleasant chats about the elections…)
If the music had lyrics such as “f your” or treatment of females as objects… how best to describe such music?
I wonder what he said…
Personally, i’ve come across kids listening to music in public parks so obscene (ie asking females to do unmentionable things). I walk past and keep my mouth shut and wonder what society is coming to
@Bugek – it doesn’t matter what the music was. If it was objectionable, there are ways to address that with the students without using racial slurs. Adults are supposed to model the correct behavior to students, not copy any objectionable behavior.
Meridith,
Correct, however I’m curious what word was used. Could the word ghetto be deemed racially charged?
.. because that would accurately describe musical lyrics that ask females to do unmentionable things.
My understanding is that it was the N-word (as alleged in the TAB article), but I cannot confirm that, or describe the exact context.
@Bugek – the correct word for the lyrics you describe is misogynist.
From the principal’s email to families:
“one of our assistant coaches used racially charged language toward our
athletes in reference to the music they were listening to on their way home from the game. This
language included the use of the N-word.”
Makes you wonder.. in 2021 if this is still happening in ultra progressive places like Newton… how bad it must be elsewhere..
