I was at Newtonville Village Day this past weekend and realized that the 2021 political competition has begun in earnest. No not the election, that’s been going for a while. I’m talking about the 2021 Political Swag Contest.
I picked up a Paul Levy screen cleaner at N’ville V Day. Looks like it could be an early contender for most novel Political Swag Award but its still early days yet.
Come election time I do try to do my homework. I do try to find out where the candidates stand on the issues that matter to me. That said, I’m pretty superficial and can be unhealthily swayed by shiny objects.
If you are a candidate and you believe you’ve got a contender for the 2021 Best Political Swag Award, send me a sample. It won’t necessarily earn my vote …. but it might. In any case it will put you in the running for a Newton Swaggie award.
I got me a Paul Levy screen cleaner but the most coveted swag item to get is the bamboo toothbrush
@Lisa – Do tell. Who’s got one of those?
@ Jerry – You need to hit up Emily Norton for one.
Emily Norton.
And this is why I don’t donate to local campaigns anymore. If any candidate wants to save a tiny bit of money, they can take my address off their mailing list. Mailers go straight into the recycle bin. It’s my small effort to save a tree.
I do make a point of getting to a house party or forum for candidates in contested races. They’re free and very informative.
I stil think Brenda Noel’s bottle opener for the 2017 campaign was the best. Still have it.
And no, I won’t be competing in the swaggle fight. Too frugal!
Thanks for the shout out Andreae, but I will be seeking Emily out to get a toothbrush!
Without a doubt, Emily Norton’s toothbrush is out in front. Also, extra points for the swag-specific slogan. Nicely done!
While swag is fun, I agree with Jane. Flyers and mailers are not changing any minds as most voters have a very good sense of who they will be voting for way before the paper hits the mailbox.
Most local elections suffer from low voter turnout and the winner often comes down to the few who show up. So what can we do to improve voter turn out?
Here’s a thought….how about we take a page from Governor Baker’s vaccination lottery playbook? A few voters are randomly selected for a quarter, quarters or full year RE Tax amnesty?
Until that day comes, I’ll take an Emily Norton bamboo toothbrush a Paul Levy screen wipe!
Thank you all for the kind words… I ordered QUITE A FEW before my opponent withdrew from the race so have plenty to distribute if anyone wants one. Maybe I’ll drop them in Halloween bags this year (along with candy of course so my house doesn’t get egged).
