The Newton Nomadic Theater is hosting a Nomad Story Slam at the Hyde Playground bandstand in Newton Highlands this Saturday at 5 PM.
These are great events inspired by the popular Moth Radio Hour on NPR. Come hear all sorts of true stories told by your Newton neighbors. If you’re a bit more adventurous, come toss you name in the hat to tell your own story. Stories must be true, have happened to you and be no longer than five minutes. For tips for storytellers, check our web site
The event is part of this weekend’s Newton Festival of the Arts and like the entire festival – it’s FREE thanks to the generosity of the festival’s sponsors.
Now that I’ve got my plug out of the way let me tell you about the rest of the festival. Its running all weekend Saturday July 10 and Sunday July 11. There will be non-stop music and performances at multiple locations around the city at the re-imagined 2021 Newton Festival of the Arts … and its all FREE! thanks to Newton Community Pride and its sponsors.
Rather than the festival running as a series of events over a month as it has in past years, this year it will be a single weekend jammed pack with continuous performances. It begins on Saturday morning at 11 AM at the Hyde Bandstand and at 11:30 AM on the lawn of the Suzuki Center in Waban Square. Sunday’s performances kick off once again at the Hyde Bandstand at 11 AM and the second stage starts up in West Newton at 1 PM the beautiful Allen House. The Allen House stage will run all afternoon and finish off with a performance by Newton’s Grammy winner Sandeep Das with Suhail Yusuf Khan starting at 7 PM.
It sounds like a fabulous lineup with something for everyone – jazz, rock, folk, classical, Afro-pop, opera, blues, baroque, soul, klezmer and more. Here’s the whole program.
Unfortunately I only got to see a few acts today and missed your slam, Jerry. Was sad to miss it. But Chris Pitts’s jazz band, the rock band, and the classical guitarist were all fantastic – so much fun and lots of energy. I hope to see all three at other Newton events in the near future. And next year maybe they can add things like food and arts and crafts vendors. Way to go to the organizers – getting a quality lineup on such short notice couldn’t have been easy.
Can you tell I’m excited to have live entertainment back?? (And outdoors for those of us with kids too young to be vaxed!)
@mmqc – I only got to see a few of the musical acts today but they were great. I’m all in for tomorrow though … and there’s some great ones on the schedule.
The Story Slam was great fun tonight with a few great surprises.
Hat’s off to Chris Pitts, Gloria Gavris and Newton Community Pride for putting this all together.
If you’re around town tomorrow definitely head to either the Hyde Bandstand or the Allen House. There’s great lineups at both venues.
See you there!
